AMD 4200 OC troubles

Thread Starter
I have had numerous troubles with overclocking my cpu. Before I get started here are my components:

1. AMD X2 4200+
2. Gigabyte Nforce4 SLi k8 Triton (Award BIOS)
3. PCMCIS 500w psu (I plan on getting a new one)
4. (2x) 512mb Corsair XMS 128bit (that's dual-channel) operating at the default 3-3-3-8 (I'm 90% I remembered that correctly)
5. Maxtor 200gb 7200 rpm (yes, yes, I'm getting a 10k rpm SATAII raptor
6. Gigabyte 3D Aurora full-tower case
7. Thermal Right XP-90C Heatsink + Vantec Tornado 4800 rpm fan (w/ fan controller)
8. x1800 XL All-In-Wonder (PCI-E)
9. There is NIC, USB card, DVD-ROM, and CD Writer in there too.

Probably more info than needed, but better safe than sorry. Now to the problem. At stock settings, everytime I knock the CPU frequency past 212, the comp hangs and goes into a reboot cycle. I try giving it more voltage, but to no avail. I can't remember if I tried only changing the HTT multiplier and nothing else, but I remember than at both 4x and 5x (the ones I tried other than auto) it would get past POST, but after intial checkups (before Windows) the screen would go blank except for a blinking cursor in the top left. I tried changing my memory timings and it took me a few tries to get things right, but it seemed to work on 2.5-3-3-6 (or close? I can't completely remember).

I just know it took a couple tries on some settings I thought should work and twice I just reset CMOS via jumpers. At the moment, I am running on standard settings (no OC) and things are smooth. I can knock up the CPU frequency to 212 and it is still stable, but one over that and the system hangs. I can provide more info upon request, please help!

first off goto user CP at top and fill in your system specs so everyone doesn't have to keep refering back to your first post for your specs...now for your [problem....from my experience the 212 sounds about right for the GigaByte...just RMA'd one back to newegg and got this DFI...I couldn't get past 212 with it either...not gonna say for definate but I'd be willing to bet it's your motherboard holding you back...got this DFI and it took right off...took my 2.2 Ghz stock to 2.6 Ghz and I haven't even played with mem timings...hope this helps...TY

My cousin has the same motherboard and he has the amd 4400 and he can get over 212... both CPUs have 2.2ghz stock. Only difference between them is that the 4400 has 1mb l32 cache on each core instead of 512mb. If I set the multiplier to 5 I can get over 212, but not by much... Obviously, doing that is a major underclock. Is this really my mobo?

The RAM requires adjusting the memory controlers multiplyer
Default 5x200=1000 most MB get unstable if you excede 1080MHz
So drop to 4 x for 201-250 and 3x for 251-333.

I thought this might be the case as well, but I cannot find a memory multiplier. There is my HT frequency which is by default at 5x and my 11x multiplier, but I cannot find the one you speak of in my advanced chipset settings or MB Intelligence Tweaker. Where should I be looking and exactly what for? I'm not sure if this is the same bios version of me, but same manufactorer and menu names

The 5x is what I was refering to
Drop it to 4x for CPU frequencies up to 250, beyond that use 3x.
BTW, sorry about the delay

Yor RAM's base speed will also play into this. You can up it's voltage to 2.8 safely which will help it attain somewhat higher speeds.
What we need to know is what are the default timings. If you don't know get CPU-Z from www.cpuid.com ,they will be in the SPD tab.
Why do I ask, lets say there CAS2-3-4-6, you will need to either cahnge the CAS to 2.5 and/or set a divider if the RAM can not keep up with the CPU's frequencies. To set a divider use DDR333 instead of DDR400, the speed will increase from 333 as you increase the CPU's frequencies.

Make sure you are running prime95 on both cores. There are other posts that tell you how to do this. Many diff ways to do it.

I can OC to the moon and back just launching once instance of Prime95, but that is because It's always only using 50% of my CPU (50% of each core or 100% of one Core = 50% of total PC processing.) The computer never breaks a sweat if you don't launch 2 Prime95's set to diff cores.

Set the affinity to Core 0, open a second instance of Prime95 and set affinity to Core 1.

Then do ctrl/alt/del to bring up task manager, find both prime95's in process list and right click the process to set affinity there as well.

That way you have one instance of Prime95 running on each core.

I say let prime go for more than 4 hours. At least 8, preferably 12.

Okay, I know how to change my memory timings (they are 3-3-3-8 and at 212.2 MHz. Normally they are at 200), but I do not know how to swap from ddr400 to ddr 333 and how to set up a memory divider. I cannot find them in my BIOS (I may just be looking for the wrong things though...)
