AMD 4200 OC troubles - Page 3

Not sure if it makes a difference and this is a silly question, but is your ram in the correct sockets? Usually there are 2 diff color sockets.

Also maybe they giving you a problem b/c they not a pair and not matched timings? Should be paired ram in paired sockets. (Just a shot in the dark)

Did you try adjusting the CPU multiplier down? Like 10 x 240? If it won't run at stock settings, somthing must be amiss.

Try going with 240x10, HTT4, add +100mV to CPU and up the Ram 100mV (I.E. from 2.6 or 2.7 to 2.8 but stay under 3.0 if you can) Also, have you tried more voltage to the FSB?

If it won't run at a 3-3-3-8 setting, than 2.5-3-3-6 is tighter and would be more difficult to attain. Loose timings from what I've read make OC a bit easier and more stable so 3.3.3.8 should be easier to get than 2.5-3-3-6 Did you try 2.5-3-3-8 ?

Do you have CPUZ? Can you post a screen-cap of your CPU , ram timings and voltages?

Maybe someone else with a bit more practice has some further suggestions. I've gotten what I have to work w/o playing with Ram timings much.

Perhaps you've got bad ram or a poor set, it happens. Sometimes you get the short end of the DDR so to speak.

Sometimes power supply being unstable can make it difficult to get a good OC too.

The 150G is sata2, the others are sata1.

As for the mobo thing I would try the folowing:
- BIOS update and see if it works. If it doesn't, go to No2
- Try OCing your CPU in another mobo. Doesn't go past 212 on a different mobo? It means your CPU isn't up to the task (doubt it thow)
- Try if possible to OC your CPU on your friend's mobo, if he lets you...If you can OC it on another mobo, I think your mobo could be fried. RMA it and problem solved.
There was somebody else saying gigabytes have sometimes an issue around 212, and I know I had a KT880 mobo paired with a 2400 soket A sempron that didn't went over 212 fsb. It's worth testing it trough, as I think it's a mobo issue what you're having.

Okay, I will try those things as soon as I get a chunk of time. I just wanted to note that for whatever strange reason, my CPU started hanging when I turned it on (just now) at 212... it has been running at 212 for quite some time. This happened earlier and I just clocked down to 200 then back to 212 and it worked again. I'm getting very annoying by gigabyte and their ****ty CS. Not to mention viewsonic (whom I just bought a new monitor from) also has ****ty support and it seems like I know more about this monitor than they do and they have not even heard of half of viewsonic's standard features... if anyone is thinking of buying a viewsonic monitor know this: great monitors, (i have 4 viewsonic LCDs on some of my comps and they run wonderfully) but horrid support.

PS: If you guys have any good ideas on good OCing mobos go ahead and post them (multiple options are even better). ATM I'm thinking of a good LAN Party mobo or DFI. I'd like to keep it around $200, but for sure under $300.

don't overvolt them unless the system becomes unstable.
overvolting will raise temperatures, and ultimately cut cpu life down to a fraction of how long it would've lasted. it'll give you a stable overclock, but avoid doing it if you can.
i mean, you raise the frequency before you raise the voltage... and if it won't boot, or won't pass a stress test, THEN you overvolt vcore... or vdimm if need be.

I think not booting would constitute "not passing a stress test"

BTW: though it usually does go up, temp doesn't always go up when raising voltage.

I read somewhere on the forum that heat and temps are not all that matter when it comes to possible damage to a chip.

An analogy would be like putting too much water through a damn...it doesn't get hot, but eventually it wont hold it back any more and bust. So while temp is a danger, it's not the only one when it comes volt modding.

Anyhow:

Sounds like you are onto something with other peeps having the same speed trouble on the giga board so go with that. More than one person having the same exact issue is not a coincidence, it's a problem with that part.

Hope all goes well.

Though your analogy was a bit off (I don't think water makes concrete hot and usually it is pressure and deterioration problems in dams...), I get what you mean. Heat isn't too much of a problem. I have a nice 100% copper Thermal Right Heat Sink and a 4800 rpm Vantec tornado fan at 12v (though due to the noise i run it at 7v with my controller). I am more worried about cpu life-span than heat.

If you are worried about span, dont go over 15-20% for the OC and you should be fine so long as you avoided extreme temps.

Quickest thing I could think of was the damn and water.... I was going for water = voltage current? Doesn't work...No...Okay... ANYHOW...

I could have given another example... but x-ratings aren't in good taste.
