Need suggestions for OC rig

Thread Starter
brief overview:
I'm in the Navy in SD and won't be going to a ship until at least Dec. '06. Currently have a 2-3 yo comp running a socket A Sempron . I'm looking to upgrade in the next month or 2 to something that can be highly oc'ed and fairly cheap(read: under $1000, preferably much more so).

I've been keeping up with current news and know that both AMD and Intel have new toys coming out around the same time as I plan to upgrade. However, I am planning on waiting until the new year to purchase a laptop with either Memron or TurionX2 or the AM2 mobile version.

This new rig will be for gaming and while I want it to be fast it doesn't have to blow everything away. I mainly play BF2 and D&DO, I might pick up Oblivion but it doesn't have to be the best picture. Right now I'm barely able to get 25 fps on BF2, but I still love to play . If I can get it up to 70 I'm happy. So here is a list of what I need to get(remember best oc capabilities for the cheapest price):

CPU (i've heard both SD 3700 and various Opty's)
Mobo (i've been told Asus or DFI Lan party)
Video Card (heard about the unlock potential of 6800's)
Memory (will get 2gb min)
Sound (may get one, not really needed IMO)
HDD (i've mainly been told WD raptor is the best no matter what, but other suggestions welcome)
Cooling (would prefer not to deal with this, but if needed to keep cpu cool enough will)
Case (could go with the one i already have, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1091099784169 ,or I was thinking this one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811209020 )
Floppy (someone please tell me there's a way to OC this! )

About the only thing I will keep from my current setup is my cdrw and DL dvdrw. I am open to any suggestions concerning different brands of mobos, video cards, and memory. I have done some OCing before for friends comps when they were already on the last leg but nothing extreme. My future plan for this once I'm on a ship is to send it back to my parents and use it as a remote comp for d/ling and possibly game server. Oh and any suggestions for a new case must not have a side panel window (I need DARKNESS to sleep but usually continously run my comp.)

In advance for your help I greatly appreciate your time, effort, and help with this.
Chris

Agree!
Hopefully by the time you buy, the 7900GT will be up to production and the price will drop back down some, currently they are inflated about $50 or more over what they would sell for.
BTW, Raptors are great but expensive. You'd do fine with most SATA drives being with 2X1G of RAM your HD wont come into play much... the RAM will cover the need for a swap file.

Thanks for the suggestion hednik. A couple of questions?

1. Why g. Skill? What type of overclocking should I expect from them? Is OCZ or Patriot any better, or am I paying for name instead? ch:

2. Is my case good enough or should I upgrade that also? it already has 500W.

3. Am I better off going with a X2 cpu?

4. Anythig else I should think about before putting it altogether?

Thanks a bunch

right now its cheap and performs awesome, its ddr 500 so you dont have to put it one divider because it made to run 250mhz stock over the ddr400. wish i could drop some bucks on it.

meh keep the case for now if you have cooling proba or just dont like it then change

x2 isnt optimized for games yet but if you multitask you could get use out of it

only thing to think about it your budget and dont cut corners in one important area to get another for high performance, and if the 7900gt is able to be found for 290-300 go for it

so i went looking around and researching and found some interesting info. reading through a few forums and the reviews on newegg, it seems there is a problem with the A8N-E not recognizing ddr500 ram. im still looking into this. also i have come into the possiblity of picking up 2gb (2x 1Gb) of Crucial Ballistix DDR500 memory for a little over $100. since this is cheap will it work or would it still be better to go with gskill for ocing?
