opty 148 is it for gaming or servers? Memory OC or CPU OC?

First of all i got opteron 148 cab2e and iam just wondering was it meant for gaming? or meant for servers, cuz i cannot see any big difference from 3.0ghz p4 or 2.22 amd venice. Correct me if iam wrong.

Second i have got bad memories i.e dont overclock higher than ddr410. Also i got an opty that can be overclocked up to 2.96ghz ( with mem max clock of 333mhz, and prime stable for 10 houres but fails in gaming ( i used larg blend stress cpu and ram). WHy is that? could anyone tell me how come? stable and fails in gaming?

third which has more performance overall in gaming ( old games ) memory overclock i.e ddr410 or 2.96ghz cpu with mem max clock of 333mhz?
yeah yeah...

The socket 940 is the server optys, NOT the 939.

As for your overclock not being stable in gaming, it could be a number of things, as the vid card is running also you could have power supply issues, the case could be heating up and giving you temps that are just pushing it over the edge.

There could be a number of factors that you will have to look into to endevour to get it stable.

As for performance that is something you will have to sort out. Do some benches and see which set-up will perform better for you. CPU speed is always handy.

Try and change your ram timings a little or even give it a little more vdimm to maybe gain stability. Try cas 3 maybe?

Some bios versions do not like loose timings so there is another factor. The tweaking can go on forever but once you find a stable medium you have to be happy with what you are running.

enjoy

tuchan, I beg to differ.
The 939 Optys were conceived to offer the option for lower budget servers. It's memory controler is said (not proven) to be optimized to better correct memory errors since the 939 strain of server CPUs dont require the far more expensive ECC RAM.

optys are made for servers, but they work just fine for gaming. at stock speeds you won't notice a big difference, but the opty does have double the cache of the venice and it should be a bit faster than that P4.

where optys shine is in overclocking. mine is at 2.75 w/o breaking a sweat.

now if the opty is compared to 2.22ghz venice or 3500+, i wasnt able to get the venice over 2.6ghz. While i was able to get the opty to 2.95ghz. Dose that mean opty in this situation faster? even tho it was meant for servers?

Also lets say the game caps the fps, at rate of 76, and surely ur system can go over 300 fps dose that mean u r losing performance due to caping? or u still perform better than 76?

well yeah, I have a 3200 venice that couldn't go past 2.6 so I ran it at 2.5 day in and day out. I got my new opty and run it at 11x250 (2.75) and noticed a performance gain.
so basically your opty clocked at 2.2Ghz vs your venice at 2.2Ghz you wouldn't notice a huge differenct. the extra cache the opty has is roughly equal to a 200Mhz increase in core frequency. however, the optys are meant for servers and thus the memory controller is geared more towards stability than performance so it is a little slower so an opty will perform about equal to a sd core clocked about 100-150Mhz lower. So a 2.2Ghz opty will perform similar to a 2.2Ghz venice (but the opty is faster if you run benchmarks you'll see this)

now for gaming. if the game is caped at 76fps then you can't get any higher than that. however, if your system could run the game faster if there wasn't a cap it will raise your avg fps. so yes, you will get better performance, but your max fps won't go up... you'll just have less dips

well your average fps would be higher so there would be a difference, but it wouldn't be that dramatic. Also, a higher end system could maintain that fps at higher resolutions w/ eye candy

now one last question now lets say all my system is on stock speed, vid,cpu etc... and with stock speed iam able to go over 76fps but the game caped it to 76. So in this situation i dont think i need to do overclocking for cpu, vid cuz iam already caped by that game.In other words the performace is limited by the game? is that rite? Or if i go ahead and overclock everythng to the max u think i can get more performance even tho the fps is caped?
yeah yeah...
