And a Clawhammer too! Fishie also lapped the Kestrel heatsink and threw that in for me--which is great because I have no HS for the socket 754. That means every thing (except the Vcard) I need to build the first Crunch rig is officially purchased and on its way!

Here is the list for Rig 1:

Clawhammer 3200+ Socket754 CPU with lapped heatsink
Gigabyte K8NS pro (PATA RAID!)
1 512 stick of XMS DDR400 (2 2 2 5!)
2 30 gig WD300 ATA 100 7,200 RPM drives (for PATA RAID!)
Enermax 350 Watt PSU (26A 12V rail!)
2 MegaCFM server fans!

I have Mandrake 10.1 linux distro for an OS (also an unused Win98se) but don't know how that will work with the hardware/ F@H....guess I'll find out.

In the next day I hope to get a $15 Vcard from the Wax Shop and that will be it.

Glad everything started moving forward again!

EDIT: Fishie threw in a gig of DDR400 ValueRAM (3 3 3 9)--which should I use 1 x 512 of XMS or 2X512 of ValueRAM?...hmmmmm

Why not use the value RAM for now as its 1Gb instead of 512Mb, then when you get the other rigs up, you can split up the 1Gb, and have 512 in each one?

Definitely a thought Nox--I wonder which would perform better --more--or faster...interesting place to start the Crunch benchmark database...lol

I went to Lowes and bought the AC filter material, pop rivets, screws and some 8 foot lengths of aluminum angle and c channel--I got an idea how to mount the mobos and PSU to make everything easily removable.

Along the bottom I plan to mount c channel to hold the filter--I will pop rivet the angle onto the top edge of the c channel--this makes a lip to trap the mobo "tray" at the bottom. Except instead of a tray I will use c channels drilled, tapped and fitted with mobo standoffs--screwing the channels to the mobo so they run vertical, the bottoms of the channels will be trapped by the L on the filter c channel. To trap the top a retaining bar made of c channel that runs side to side in the case will fit into 2 small chunks of c channel screwed to either side--by lifting out this retaining bar the top of the "tray" is released and the mobo can be lifted free without the use of fasteners.

I realise I might have lost you mid paragraph--so you will just have to wait for pictures to appear in the Host Killer thread...lol.

I also figured another way to mount the PSUs so that I can still have room for all 4 mobos and not have to cut into the case. 2 aluminum angles running side to side will support the PSUs and keep them in position--by mounting these angles to the case interior with small chunks of angle pop rivetted to them, the PSUs can be centrally positioned in the top. Another angle is screwed against the case interior to support a small panel that fits between the bottom of the PSUs on the switch/cord/exhaust side and the case to keep the hot air exhaust from the PSU from entering the case--measurements indicate that there should be enough room to mount the server fans to this panel from beneath. This way all the hot air is being blown out the top and all the components are still hidden in the case.

It will be an extremely tight fit and I won't know for sure about the clearances until I have a mobo in hand.

Unfortunately for Crunch progress will come to a standstill for the next few days until things mormalize here at the house.

Thanks for your interest in this build.

The one gig of valueram will perform better than the 512 of XMS. Keep updating with the progress!

Were you going to run the 4 PSU's or try and get it all to run from 1 or 2 or just worry about that at a later date?

Have you thought about getting mobo's with on-board video, that would be a option BUT with F@H getting themsoeves sorted os the vid cards will be able to help with WU's then maybe vid cards is the way to go. They can always be added though. Dameware will be very useful for this project.

What is Dameware?

I was going to jumper the 24 pin to run 2 mobos per PSU...I had originally planned to use only microATX w/onboard video and no expansion cards. But then reality intervened and I found a clawhammer, mobo, RAM for less than the cheapest 805 build. SHort on cash and wanting to get this rig alive I went for the ATX clawhammer rig--a pain in some ways as I want ot avoid cards.

Big Val--thanks for answering my RAM query!

Get that and have a play, you can remotely run a number of computers from 1. Great for fixing problems on other rigs from anywhere in the world!!!
