Can I automatically underclock my video card when it's not under heavy load?

I finally got my replacement 9800GTX+ and want to finish a project I never figured out how to do with the first card.
I'm not an every day gamer, my computer runs 24/7, and I don't like my GPU constantly sitting there doing nothing while it's still cooking it's life away for no reason. So I was wondering if their was a way I could set the GPU to underclock itself when not under heavy load (like under 25%) so it can stay cooler just like my CPU does, it's a 3.4GHz quad core CPU but when it's not in use it clocks itself down to 800MHz and will idle at 85F, while my GPU stays at 122F. By manually turning all the frequencies on the video card down (Core from 740 to 185MHz, Memory from 1100 to 275MHz, Shader from 1836 to 459MHz) I'm able to get the card down to 110F, if I had the ability to lower the voltage too I'm sure I could get the card down to 90F. I tried doing it using the nVidia tools but it only allows "rules" for overclocking under heavy use and refuses to lower the clock rate at all. So is their something I'm missing or do I need a different program?
Here's my video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133330

this is what i did with my old 8800 gts. you should be able to do the same thing

maybe if you use NiBiTor or something the like you can make it permanent together
with lowering the voltages (not sure about a software solution for that sry)

Thanks for the info, not too sure if I want to do all that for such a simple task... But if it ever becomes enough of an annoyance I now at least know one way to get it to work.

Unfortunetly no, I don't think I've ever seen a video card downclock when not in use.

Try creating a 2d and 3d profile in Afterburner using automatic profile management.

Doubt the voltage will change, but a downclock in 2d may well work.

nVidia has had load-based downclocking in 2d mode as far back as the 7800gt. They stopped doing it on a lot of the 8 and 9-series cards though. Then they brought it back for the 200 series and Fermi cards.

Cards have lower GPU idle clocks. Open up gpu-z and switch to the sensors tab. I'm sure it has lower 2d clocks.
