never overclocked before

Hi all
I am hoping someone can help me out and show me how to overclock my system, My set up comprises OF :- A Giga-byte GA-K8N Pro SLImobo(bios F9)
AMD Opteron 144 1.8Ghz
Artic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro
Seasonic S12 600W PSU
2X OcUK GeForce 7900GT ( in SLI)
At the moment I have bog standard 1GB (2x512MB) Dual Novatech 3200 DDR400 but have coming soon, 1GBKit (2x 512MB) Crucial Ballistic 4000 DDR500,I also have two Sata Hard drives 1x 160gb & 1x 120gb and am running Win XP Home with SP2 installed.
I have just put this system together as a major upgrade from what i had before, I have tried to read an article on overclocking from "CustomPC" mag but i just can't get my old head around it (nearly 50 you see) but i think its because they are using adifferent Mobo and therefore a different Bios to mine that i don't seem to be pressing the right options as there's is worded differently to my Mobo, I tried decressing the DDR timings to 2-1.68 which took my memory down to 333 I then upped the CPU to 225ghz which brought the memory back to 400 but it just freezes on post startup and tells me to prees DEL key to get back to the Bios and i then have to reset it back to its original settings of - CPU 200mhz and memory at 400, but i've read that the Opteron 144 is a great over clocker and some have clocked it at 2.8ghz still with fan cooling.. Sorry this is so long winded but i've tried to remember to put in all the details that someone might need to help me out, Hope someone can help or should i wait until the new memory arrives before i go to daft, as i don't want to mess things up as i've spent a fairly large wad of cash already building th thing... Thanks for your time..
Norman...........

This guide should help you:
http://www.overclock.net/overclock.p...king-guide.htm

There will be quite a few terms that don't apply to your mobo, as there are no generic guides (all manufacturers use different terms for some reason).

Good luck

Thanks for your reply, I think I'll hang on until my new ram arrives and give it another try then, cause I'm not having much luck with the setup at the moment. Seems lots of people are having trouble to overclock Gigabyte boards, just my luck..Thanks again STE..

Thanks for your coment Sideburn, Its the Bios thing I'm having trouble grasping, But I have some Crucial Ram coming 2x 512 4000 DDR500 I'm hopping that will improve things, but It's the Bios I need to try and understand and then i'm sure my system will be a good-un. It's the first time i've built and tried to overclock so i'm being cautious so as i don't burn anything out..

I've cracked the overclocking problem, my Opteron 144 is now running at 2.25Mhz (from 1.8 stock) and solid as a rock, I think it would go to at least 2.3 or even 2.4 (air cooled) and even higher with water cooling, I ran Prime95 over night with no errors then played Call of Duty at max settings all day to finnish the game and no problems, the temp of chip at end was only 39deg, I had to tweak the bios a fair amount to achive a solid overclock but I'm happy with what I now have. Thanks to all who responded to my plea for help, cheers guys
