Opteron 165, what HS, where? - Page 2

You could look at an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 also. Cooling on par with the Big Typhoon but half the cost, and has a quiet fan and fan mounting system.

Heres a review of it against the BT and Zalman

Another concern with OEM AMD cpu's is they do not come with the manufacturer heatsink/fan. You have to return this with the processor to obtain warranty service, and their logic there is you are required to use the heatsink and fan provided or your warranty is void. If you get an OEM version make sure you get a decent warranty program through the reseller to help protect yourself. In additon, head laboitenoire's advice and buy a PSU that is UL certified.

I think over in Europe the TUV is the equivalent to UL. I'm not sure, but I do have a french floppy that is TUV certified lying around here somewhere.

Here it's not UL but CSA. (But even if it's UL certified and not CSA it's apparently OK)

OK, there are lots of heatsinks, but I was planning to get the mobo probably horizontally mounted. I read that H/S some aren't as efficient in vertical position.

Also, I would like to have the less fans as possible in the case. Maybe the top will be open and only the heatsink fan would cool the computer. Is this possible?

Building your own PSU is a bad idea. If your computer or even something else goes up in smoke because of it, you'll have a tough time making insurance claims, as it wouldn't be UL certified.
Sure, there's this problem(Doh!) -- I don't know if we have home insurances btw... ??

Linear PSUs are quite safe(The regulators are the only heating parts). Better take no chances... (Or I should test it with an old computer next to a fire extinguisher...)

The problem would then be with the ATX format. Getting all the timings correct... I only built amp PSUs, not computer ones!

Are you getting a desktop case? I would discourage that strongly, as they tend to have really bad air flow. A tower case is much better, and position shouldn't affect a heatsink too much. Heat pipes are a little picky about orientation, but this won't affect it.

No, DIY, to fit on an audio equipment shelf...

Size shouldn't be a problem, my amp is as big as an old 486 mid-tower case. (When mid-towers were a lot bigger than what we have now)

I was thinking to use no cooling fans(other than CPU heatsink's) and a grille on the top instead of a cover.

It could work, but generally HTPCs run a little hot because they are so cramped. There's actually quite a few nice HTPC cases that actually do have decent cooling, and they should fit one of the Zalman heatsinks. There are plenty of power supply manufacturers that make silent units.

They're closed also.

I've looked at the Antec Phantom PSUs, but they're a tad expensive ($200 !!!!) for me. (As if an Opteron 165-BOX + Giant heatsink + 2x Seagate 300GB wasn't pricey enough)

I'd buy a tower if place wasn't a problem... (I've got space for one, that's what my P3 800 is in now, but it uses almost -all- the remaining space)

Do use some case fans, there are plenty that are almost dead silent and will improve cooling the system.
