DFI CFX3200, misunderstanding.

Thread Starter
Looks like a great board, and within a few months the $230 price tag is sure to drop. This board is currently not too much more expensive than that CFX1600 which I was looking to pick up sometime this month, priced at $166.

Unto the questions, Do these two boards utilizes the same chipsets for the North and South bridge? (No they dont I just looked it up on Newegg) Moving past this, is the ULi southbirdge chipset reputable for being stable, fast, and functional, or is it problomatic?

Second off, I read a post by a certian member of this board stating that with the CFX3200 boards, a crossfire setup does not require a controller video card, ie a crossfire edition card. Is this true?

Can a SLi motherboard be easily modded, or patched, to work as a crossfire board or vice versa?

And are the 16x-16x boards sharing a 32x bandwidth, or do they have thier own 16 lanes per bus? If they do share does a single video card in a say the CFX3200 or Tru Sli 16x run at 32X?

Thanks for your input, any and all opinions and facts are apreciated.

Yes, the new Crossfire boards have alleviated the need for Master Cards. Each graphics slot has 16X, so you'll never have a single card running 32X.

You might look into it, but I'm not sure if those are able to run in Crossfire mode at all.

I believe (someone needs to email ati and confirm for sure, lots of questions about this) that the "no mastercard" thing is still waiting on a catalyst release for this, also I think it's restricted to the X1000 family. The x800xl will run in crossfire with a x800CF mastercard, but why, lol.

depends upon the vga cards e.g. you can't on X1900XT/XT-X but you can on X1600 & supposedly X1800 when they release the driver

In theory they should be able to with driver support but marketing/politics currently prevent it.

the true dual X16 (ATi CF3200 & nVidia C51D boards) have X16 on both the main PCI-E slots.
Afaik they don't do X32 on 1 (certainly impossible on the C51D chipset) & there would be no point as we haven't even saturated X8 yet let alone X16.
