Amazing to think that highstreet game shops stocked graphics cards back then!

Electronics Boutique....haha , I remember them , remember when the malls had Waldon Software and Egg Head (which I believe became New Egg) ?

I had a Voodoo 2 12mb model, Diamond Monster 3d II, which was my first real hardware purchase biggrin.gif
Then I used a Voodoo Banshee that was in my father's Pentium II rig, and later on I built a rig of my own (first build I assembled and picked all parts for) that had a Voodoo 3 3500 agp, with tv/out.
Wish I could get those back, lost them after moving out of my parent's home. frown.gif

I know exactly what you mean. While I was in college, my parents moved to a new house. I had a box in the garage that contained a 286, 386, and 486 motherboard, and an old original sound blaster 8-bit. It did kind of look like a box of e-trash, and most of my other junk did travel properly, so I can't be too upset about a box of relic parts.

Sure, DOSBOX, plays all those old games just fine. In reality its only the voodoo that's 'special' in that I think certain games look very different than what the glide wrappers put out. I hope the experimental 3dfx emulation in dosbox eventually reaches good frame rates, because the images that it puts out looks about right. DOSBOX's sound blaster emulation beats everything else; VDM Sound, etc all suck in comparison.

For some reason, playing an old game on an old 486 'feels' different than playing in emulation, but if you pick it apart, the sound and graphics seem correct. What's going on here? Is it just an illusion?

I do think Glide on Voodoo cards looks way better when using the real thing...I've seen vids comparing them, and experienced it myself. NFS 3 for example looked absolutely gorgeous with my Voodoo 3 and so did Unreal Tournament.

true that ivanlabrie , that is exactly why I rebuilt a couple of Glide machines

I'd love to have a Voodoo 5 somehow...I got a couple of cpus I could put to good use with ddr2 and an agp capable board.
I'll get one someday, should do for a nice xmas gift biggrin.gif

You'll have a hard time: the voodoo 5 was an agp 1.0 card (up to 2x). There were really few universal agp slot motherboards that could use. For instance, the MSI motherboard in my 3dfx rig was one of the last boards to feature this universal slot. You can mod the slot or the card if you wish, but I wouldn't.

That's because of this...

Thanks for the explanation...makes perfect sense.

I just found this and I'm drooling already.

I could put that sucker in my 3770k rig, that would be so epic.
