I registered just to post in this thread. Add me to the list of happy 3dfx fans. It's too bad rampage never came out, that would have been incredible.
Man this brings back memories.
My first 3d accelerator was an Intergraph Intense 3D Rush. It was a Voodoo Rush with some deluxe features, like composite and S-Vid output. That card lasted a long
time. I got it the Christmas before the V2's came out, so that would put it late in 1996. I knew the V2s were coming out, and I also knew there was no way I was going to convince my parents to get one of them
. In retrospect the only regret I have was that I didn't get a Voodoo instead of a rush (I had an ATI M64 PCI in the comp, that combination would have been faster and better than a rush).
That card went in a P166 overdrive machine with 48MB of EDO, and then when that board went belly up we replaced it and ended up with 128MB of SDRAM, and then we ended up replacing the 166 chip with a 233 MMX chip. Nothing changed until years later when I built my first box from scratch (PIII 600EB slot 1 with Geforce 256 SD). That card lasted a long
time. It worked for several years after I replaced the comp too, until one day the screen had a purple tint. I reseated the Rush and a few months later, it just died
I won't lie though. In the years in between, I wish I had a faster comp (but PIIs were so pricey, and our 233mhz PI was still fine), and I did ogle the V2 cards. That Rush just kept playing games that were coming out though. I distinctly remember when I picked up a copy of MDK2 and it ran fine on my lowly Voodoo Rush but it ran like crap on a friends top of the line P2 400 box with an AGP card from ATI.
Then about 10 years ago, I said I wanted to build a vintage rig. I got a V4 4500 PCI and dropped it in that sucker (with an Awe64 Gold and a custom SPDIF cable). Somehow I lost interest and that box got scrapped (but I kept the V4 and the A64 Gold).
A year or two after the V4, I was doing some work for a guy and I picked up a V3 3000 PCI from his old box. A few years later, I picked up a Creative Labs V2 2000 PCI from a box in the trash, and then a few years after that another V3 3000 (this time AGP). Sadly, one of those V3's got tossed, and so did the V2 (I had driver isues on the computer I was working with and said screw it).
Now I came full circle. I just saw a listing on Ebay for New whitebox (no packaging) STB Black Magic V2's. I snagged three of them so I could have a spare).
So short story long, and in summary, here's the 3dfx stuff I've owned/own:
Voodoo Rush - Died, I wish I had kept the dead card though
Creative Labs V2 PCI - Tossed, I'm an idiot
3 x STB Black magic V2 - I'm getting buried with these, they were my dream card for like 3-4 years running
Voodoo 3 PCI - Didn't die, I shouldn't have tossed it
Voodoo 3 AGP - Still got it (I think)
Voodoo 4 PCI - Still got it
I'll post some pics when the black magics show up. I'll also dig out the V4 and the V3.
