6800 Series Aftermarket Cooling Thread - Page 3

I see

you have one of these cards do the VRM's get overly hot ?

I have also been looking for clearance pics of the MK 13 because I was thinking what if I modded my own VRM heatsinks would the chances be better?

How about the "Arctic Cooling Accelero XTREME 5870" that would have to be able to be a bolt on fit since the GPU it's self is about 5 mm over to the right and it already has the cut out for the stacked DVI ports.
Plus the 6870 ram layout is the same as the 5870.

So is it a triple slot cooler I can't quite tell.

Not to worry, the Accelero XTREME plus says that it has 6870 support, I'll just get one of those linkie HERE

Anything is possible with modding.

Also, the vreg temps are very good on this card. I've been gaming for about 20 minutes now and they have only seen 52c at 40% fan speed

And yes the xtreme plus does have support for it but it is pretty much overkill on this card and that cooler is huge. It is like 11 inches long itself. On the 6870, that would easily make the card 11.5 inches long, which is too big for some peoples cases, like mine.

So I have to ask, is it really worth it to go after market on these cards. Please be candid.

Or should I just go a pair of Zalman VF3000A VGA Coolers and call it a day ?

BTW +3 for good solid hands on knowledge.

To my knowledge, zalman has not released a version of the vf3000 for the 6870. I don't think it comes with the proper heatsinks for it.

If it does, the zalman would definitely be the absolute top dog for performance, under the arctic cooling accelero xtreme plus of course.

And I definitely think these cards could benefit from aftermarket cooling.

at the top of the thread "Confirmed: Zalman VF-3000".

so I guess it's a toss up of:

Zalman VF-3000 and cut my own VRM heatsinks

or

Arctic Cooling Accelero XTREME 5870 and modify the VRM heatsinks it comes with to be more suitable for the 6870.

Thread Starter
It really depends on your model but on some carss you can leave the plate on. Like the guy with the GPU block did.

Most cards have the VRM's on the left but not all.
I dont think the VRM's need as much cooling as the ones on the 5k series, let alone those on the 4k series.
Most 6870's, at least the one from XFX and the one from MSI have a plate that you can use.

Well they are all vanilla at the moment so what you see in XFX,MSI is exactly the same as all the others at the moment.

Arctic Cooling has updated their list of cards for the Twin Turbo Pro HERE

It looks like the 6870 is compatible - with VR001, what on earth is VR001?

Also, I've had an idea that I'd like an opinion on:

If I was to remove everything but the stock heatsink and the plate that covers the ram and what not, could I comfortably cool this card with my own fan attached directly onto the stock heatsink? (at stock speeds)

Obviously it would not be as effective as some of the aftermarket coolers out there but it would be cheaper for me as I have a ton of spare fans to try.
