Help a guy overclock?

Hi, I have my pentium d 840 running at 3.78 ghz stable, but when I go up to 3.8, it starts having a fit. Is this because of my ram or my motherboard (because mine's nforce4) or something else?

Also, what is the cpu termination voltage? (could this be the problem? ) Mine is set at 1.25v, and my vcore is at 1.325v if that helps. I've loosened my ram timings like crazy. For the purpose of trying to get to 3.8 ghz+, I have crucial ram with the timings at 6-7-7-21 (pretty bad, huh?) I'll tighten them later. It has passed memtest numerous times, and I've been testing it with prime95 (no errors yet).

I think my temps are descent. It has never gone over 60c, and it levels out at 57c (it spikes to 60c sometimes, but it doesn't stay there for any considerable length of time.) Also, those temps are after having a full load for half an hour on both cores.

If it's the motherboard, I know sli isn't built into the other ones, but I know there are hacks to make it work. (any1 mind telling me the url to one of them? )

Note: I've increased the vcore to 1.375v to see if it's the problem...

well if i was you..id definitely calm down on the v-core a bit

those temps are pretty high, tighten those timings because even though you sometimes need to tighten to get an overclock theres no way they really need to be THAT loose ya know..

i heard that sli boards dont oc too well, it could be the problem.
your ram on the other hand i dont think thats the problem,
try putting your timings back to default (by the way what are they?)
and maybe try running a divider

id like to help ya

kk, The default timings on my ram are 5-5-5-dunno. I did that(lowered the vcore to 1.3125v, and set the ram timings to auto), but it did the cpu parameter recall thing (automatically reset the cmos).

Well, anywho, I've got it back up with 5-5-5-16 ram timings (for now) 3.8 ghz with a 3.325vcore. I can't seem to find any ram/fsb divider. I set my ram to 750 mhz. And, I'm running prime 95 again.

ok,

i think you were doing the overclock pretty good to tell you the truth, id invest in some better cooling, because at the moment it looks like temp is the problem for you..

so now that you have a reset cmos i think you should start over
and see how far you can get oc'ing without having to change the timings on your ram..

and before you change the timings, when you hit a brick wall try running a divider, and then loosen your timings

(try on stock voltage first )

Okay, ya, I think I found the divider, but I had some trouble getting the ram past 760 a while ago. So, I set it to clock the ram and the fsb independently. Right now, it's a 14:11 divider. As for cooling, i've heard the big typhoon is comparable to water cooling setups. I guess I'll get one off of newegg. It won't boot at anything more than 3.74 ghz at a 1.3vcore.

lol, im not laughing at you at all its just that its the exact same with my mobo at the same exact speed..i cant go above that same speed no matter what without it booting up, i dont have many options at all though...
have you tried just running the ram 1 speed slower and trying to oc like that?
it dosnt seem like you should have to set such a divider

The divider's a little weird. It's called the precision tweaker (I think), and it greys out the ram's mhz adjustment option so I only have the fsb to tweak. Then, the ram goes up with the fsb. 14:11 is the divider displayed in cpu z, but it's really 950:750 in the bios. What do you mean by one lower, one divider lower? I'll try setting it to 730 mhz and see what happens. I've also set the fsb up another 5 mhz to 955 mhz. I'm running two cpu burn ins now for 15 mins. The problem didn't become evident last time until 3.86 ghz though. It took at least two hours for it to crash at 3.8 ghz. It just crashed after 15 mins of cpu burn in at 3.86.

update:
Windows counjoured the blue screen of death =\\ at cpu/ram 955/730

well that gives you a sign of memory faliure so i wouldnt try to oc that much more...im starting to think that the mobo might be limiting you now...but what i meant by 1 down is, in my bios it gives me speeds to run my ram at i only have 2 (333mhz,400mhz) so id set it at 333mhz and that would give me a 1:2 divider maybe try that sort of a divider

I set the ram to it's stock speed (666mhz), but it had another memory dump. I've read the increasing the pci e frequency to 105 mhz would increase overclockability of the cpu. I'll try that.
