C1E disabled would not boot and EIST is disabled. I'm trying to follow the guide on the main page but it's different in so many ways, I don't know where to start. Any tips?

QPI/Vtt @ 1.61? What's your Vcore?

Peak load temps @ 72c? What stress test?

Thats with Prime mate.. IBT (8 thread) 78 i think from memory.. 88c or so @4.5 IBT but not realistic temps so.. Mind you i'm using antec 1200 and 8 UK3000 etc.. not maxed out though - only maxed on the 240 rad with 2 in push - and i over compensate on pull to draw out excess heat from MB/5970 etc - but have x6 fancontroller so adjustable.

qpi 1.61 (about 1.6) windows isn't high. I know I know many would disagree but depends on how high your pushing memory , how many slots, and general cooling etc.. if you look it's the rated qpi for trident 1600 (2000) and bought a second set of 6gb about two months ago so thats with 6 slots.. vcore at 1.48ish in bios to get 4.4.

NB does peek at about 55c under load but thats accepable and x58 are known for high nb so.

For 4.5 Vcore is 1.55 LLC2 in bios 1.58 under load.. but temps are fine.. and again no deg whatsoever after three months so in my book all good.no degredation anywhere either so 24/7 @4.5 for me currently.

p.s. i could also down multi the memory to 1560 or something like that and lower qpi anyways as the 960 is 25 multi so more room to fiddle/breath.

can't get SS to work at 4.5 though (with normal voltage plus .35 or something)so it's off - but flashed 5970 bios so will try again, think it was cold issue as was getting screen freezes with SS @4.5 dammit.

ideally i'd lke SS on at 4.5 just to lower idle temps.. currently 35-38c idle with 24-27amb i think it is..

apologise for over explanations. put a lot of time and effort into it so yeah..

Am I in the right thread to ask for help or is this for people who already know what they're doing? If so, I don't belong in here yet. I've never overclocked and it's something I really want to delve into. Not only did I just build this from scratch last night, there's other things I'm not sure of. For example, none of my sata controllers recognize anything in my BIOS like the users manual for this mobo has shown. I'm more than positive everything is hooked up properly. Things like that make me nervous since I'm playing with $1,400 and I don't want to ruin anything. I just wish there was a guide that revolves around the 950 instead of the 920, or maybe I just need to play around with the settings and know my BIOS before I try anything severe.

I read that vtt of about 1.45 is pushing it on the I7's. Is that not true? I haven't been willing to go past that to get higher clocks.

I am sure you put a lot of work into that. Nice.

Start here with this guide...

http://www.techreaction.net/2010/09/...-and-gulftown/

read it and follow it carefully. If you don't have upgraded CPU cooling. Stop until you do.

As for your mobo, get latest BIOS, then you need to sate the exact problem in detail so we can help you.

For example, SATA III controllers are known to be problematic with this board, but your making me guess.

Clunk.org.uk Core i7 Overclocking Guide For Beginners This guide uses an Asus board, so settings will be similar.

What is your sata prob? On mine DVD in 0 and C drive in 1 - don't know if that's any sort of rule, but works for me.

The difference between 920 and 950 is mainly the multipliers available, like the 950 gives you up to 23x (and even 24x in Turbo mode). When I OCed to 4.2 I used 21x200, just like a 920. It's not that critical but most use the odd number multis like 21 and 23.

Follow the guide in the link. It explains it all, and is easy to understand. Self-education (reading) is very important in OCing, as it is in life.

READ the entire post in that link and follow the instructions found in it. START THERE. It should answer most of what you want and need to know. AFTER you have read all of it and tried what it says THEN start asking questions.
