I up my voltage 2 steps at a time then fine tune. Someone also recently posted that too many BSOD's and windows might not load. Is this true? That was enough to make me rethink OC'ing completely.
Raise your multi and lower your BCLK, try getting stable at 22 x 185 or 23 x 175 and go from there...

I have a hard time doing anything past 185 BCLK... Good thing for the 23 multi...

I have benched at 190 & 195, posted at 200 for a cpu-z but have a hard time getting stable.
I am already at 1.34v VTT for 185 so I dont want to raise that.
Tried QPI as high as 1.40, didnt help. And QPI is at 1.23 for 185

Only down side is ram speed is underclocked, but I was able to crank the timings down enough that I didnt loose any perfromance from 1600 - 7-9-8 to 1475 6-8-6

So try different multi x bclk and see if it helps.....

X58A-UD5 should be able to do that though. My lowly X58A-UD3R got up to 230bclk. (not stable)

21 x 200 was not that hard for me. Easily stable. Some people say this mobo family prefer uneven number multis, like 19x, 21x, and 23x. Could be.

Cant hurt to try a different bclk and higher multi though.

These guys at Clunk.org.uk give a lot of settings and discuss the UD7 - the settings are same same, so the first few pages can help a lot. Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 Living Review

Board has little to do with it, each cpu is different and some may not do that high of a bclk...

The guy I got my board from had a 920 on it at 200 bclk 24/7, my 950 struggles to even post at it... So its not the board..

I'm still learning, and bclk's quite possibly it. My instincts say other settings, but I've certainly been wrong before and probably will be again.

Yeah, same here. I try and study what each setting is, and what not..

With 775 we had FSB on both board & cpu to deal with, some cpu's would not go higher than 350 FSB (E5x00 series) and some boards struggled past 450 FSB (everything except the UD3)

With this new tech the bclk or Base Clock is on the chip

Quote:
Processor Clocking (BCLK_DP, BCLK_DN)
The processor core, Intel QPI, and integrated memory controller frequencies are
generated from BCLK_DP and BCLK_DN. Unlike previous processors based on front side
bus architecture, there is no direct link between core frequency and Intel QPI link
frequency (such as, no core frequency to Intel QPI multiplier).
Im still on most stuff, but the bclk is the cpu, the board handles communication from pci - cpu and mem - cpu.

With 775 the NB on the motherboard handled that

X58 = MEM - CPU - PCIE with the cpu as the central
775 = MEM - NB - CPU - NB - PCIE with the NB as the central...

Intel just moved the memory controller from the board to the cpu....

I'm sure it is my base clock. I had a successful OC of 4.255 with a bclk 185x23 @ 1.396v and that was pretty stable. I'm stubborn about this setting cause I want the RAM at 1600mHz like 10acjed said. I'll just keep upping the voltage until I'm stable. As long as my voltage is low enough so my load temps stay under 80c Prime 95 I'll be happy. And it does seem like it wants to be stable, like everything works perfectly fine but I get BSOD'd when P95 or OCCT'ing it. 0x0124 error so I'm guessing that's voltage. My QPI is maxed out at 1.335v

Oh and for my QPI link speed and Uncore frequency I always have 36x and 18x accordingly. I took it off of auto and set it this way. Is this right?

Running P95 for 2 hours now. 4.0gHz @ 1.344v 1600mHz RAM. Everything is finally looking stable. Temps top out at 80c. I'll run it for a full 8 hours to make sure. Thanks for the feedback everyone. Happy Easter

If my ram is 8x then I use Uncore frequency of 16x or 17x. Up until 4GHZ used 17x, but since then my setup has preferred 16x.

I don't bother trying to maintain an exact 1600 on the ram. Right now I'm running at 1536MHz ram and 4.416GHz CPU. Whatever works for you though.

the 4.25 setting will be faster, 250MHz cpu is much more noticable than 200MHz ram speed...

Just crank down your timings...

I have no idea how to mess with that man, I'm totally wet behind the ears in this game. I don't know how to mod my ram timings. I can get my computer to 4.2 with the 1600mHz ram but I have to crank the voltage to over 1.42. So that's why I backed off the multiplier one step and I'm stable at only 1.344v. Reasonable temps. Actually to be honest almost the exact same temps as the 4.2 OC. I'm overwhelmed.
