Do you think the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ will be able to handle an I7 950 at 3.8-4.0GHz ? I'd like to keep it under 80 degrees in Prime95 if possible.
Yeah - a CM 212+ should be able to do 3.8, I dunno about 4.0 though.

But regarding your stock cooler, I can almost guarantee that you've installed it wrong somehow. The stock cooler is made to be able to handle the stock speeds at fairly ok temperatures, not 92C. You should try reseating the cooler first...or you could just jump the gun and get a aftermarket cooler.

I would definitely look around for one - what is your budget for a cooler?

Yea I know, at first I thought I did something wrong but then I researched a bit and found out many people experienced 90 degrees in prime95 with the stock cooler.

In all other applications it's sitting at 70-75 degrees.

I don't wanna spend more than $30 on a cooler so the 212+ seemed the obvious choice. I'm fine with 3.8GHz as long as it's not overheating after 10 minutes of Prime95. Should I go for it ?

Yeah, if your budget is $30, you can't go wrong with the 212+. I'd say go for it.

Other people probably experience this because their heatsink isn't installed properly either. That is a common problem because of the heatsink clip design. It is the clips that are the problem. If just one is not properly seated you will get high temps.

It is best to instal that heatsink on the mobo before putting the mobo in the case, because then you can see if the black pins have properly inserted between the clear nylon parts just by looking at the back of the board and comparing them all. If you have a good case that allows you to see the back of the pins then you are lucky. If the pins are all inserted properly then the cooler should cope with stock loads without temps climbing to the seventies.

It is not recommended to overclock with the stock cooler though. If you are going to overclock, then certainly go for a better heatsink.

that nice system and you dont want to spend more than $30 on a cooler? I wonder if you mean you cant afford to spend more than $30 right now... That would make more sense...

The 212+ is a decent enough cooler for a mild OC, 3.8 may even be tough tho. My 950 runs rather warm as well and hit 78c load at 3.8 with a lapped TRUE with 2 yate loon high speed fans in a push>pull...

I suggest looking in the For Sale Section @ OCN and look for something..

I use a CM V8 on my 950 @ 4ghz on my work pc. Loads around 70-72c in a air conditioned room at 70f. The 212 is great for 3.6ghz.

Need to post what you have it set at before anyone can really give you help. All I can say is give a little voltage bump at this point. Try + .025v on the cpu. Your temps are fine.

Hard to give advice without knowing what hardware you have....

Quote:
You need to click on the User CP at the top of this page, then scroll down the left side to the Add System link and enter in your system specs in as much detail as possible. By that I mean 2 x 2gig G.Skil PC2-8500 CL5 ram instead of 4 gig ram, etc. That way we have some idea of what we are dealing with. While you are at it, go to the Edit Your Details link, then scroll down towards the bottom and fill in the Where You Live with at least your country. It makes things so much easier when people know what country you are from when recommending products.
Then give us an idea of the settings you are using, and which Prime95 test it is. Blend tests ram and cpu so could be either of those. If its small fft then most likely cpu.
