Time to shake up this thread I think biggrin.gif Starting to get a bit dusty in here!

Here's a question - I have my 950 up to 4.1Ghz stable @ 1.304v HT/on (according to CPU-Z - http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2333473). That voltage seems in-line with all the other results I've seen around here. But here's the problem: I had 4.0Ghz stable at 1.24v.

Is it normal to have such a hike in voltage for a 100mhz boost?

The only difference in the bois settings was that I switched from hard voltage to offset. Interesting thing to note: with offset, 4Ghz took almost 1.28v to be stable. What gives?

offset is designed to be used with CPU EIST, only worked up to 4.2GHz for me, and the math on the offset didn't match the voltage I got in monitoring progs and CPUZ....

https://docs.google.com/a/overclocked.net/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ak7CLAMF3DXYdHJSQzdvZUJUX3EwaGZuX0J3OEpFcFE&authkey=CKz9sbIJ&authkey=CKz9sbIJ#gid=0

there are figures for 4.2GHz there in both straight vcore and offset in the spreadsheet....

My voltages really jumped after 4.2GHz.

I'm find that a teeny bit hard to understand TBH tongue.gif

Does that mean that for 4.2Ghz, you were running about 1.306v in the bios, but software showed about 1.6v? Or am I completely off?

You'll note that the figures on the spreadsheet for DVID add up to 1.30625v, but in cpuz it showed higher than the 1.3125 - can't remember exactly how much, but after 4.2 trying to enter 1.42v i'd get over 1.5 showing, which is why, as far as i'm concerned, i didn't want to use it above 4.2GHz...

Go ahead and experiment to see if you get the same thing smile.gif

Ah, gotcha.

Is it "safe" to run a 1.3v OC 24/7? I'm pretty close to 4.2 actually, so just boosting my bclk by 3Mhz should do the trick.

I operated on the assumption that anything under 1.45v was ok as long as I could keep temperatures below 78 while stress testing with Prime95.... I can be wrong though.....

4.2 was fine on water. For me it was after that that vcore escalated quickly..

Hmm, trying for 4.2 on air might be pushing my luck too far then.

Only way to know is to test it. thumb.gif Running with my side panel off, 4.1Ghz max loads were around the mid 70s, 4.2 might get it into the low 80s I'd assume.

Mine would tend to crash around 83C...but I could get through 3DMark11 at 4.6GHz on the 950 and 4.8 on the 970 without cooking. Just couldn't run proper stress tests.

Just to add some more data, I've similarly been holding firm at 4.03MHz because that seems to be the voltage sweet spot for my chip. Or put another way, there's a voltage "wall" my chip has to climb if I want a higher clock. Although I think it's significant that we're both running at x23 multiplier... anecdotal evidence here seems to indicate x21 might be better...

I've never really done a serious overclock in terms of tweaking any of the secondary settings, I've only played with BCLK, multiplier, and voltage so maybe it's time to get my hands dirty a bit more biggrin.gif

Yeah, I ran 4Ghz on 21x multiplier. Used a bclk of 191 and voltage was fixed at 1.24v

Experience and general buzz does seem to indicate that 21x would work better. Maybe i should try for 4.2 with a 21x multi instead. Most intriguing.
