I can't get my P4 3.0 (630) above 3.8 GHz

Hi all,

My specs are listed below. The screenshot of cpu-z was made when I was at stock timing 3.0ghz.Do bare in mind that my motherboard has a nforce chipset.

Currently, I'm on Vcore 1.425 and Vdimm 1.9 . My Fsb is 254 and ram is at 506mhz. My ratio is 1:1. I have tightened my timings to 3-3-3-6. My default ram timing is 4-4-4-8. Idle temp 38c max at 49c ambient at 23c .

My problem is, I loosened my timing back to 4-4-4-8, upped the vcore to 1.5
and vdimm to 2.1 but I'm not able to boot windows. The fsb settings that I tried is 267 and the memory setting is 534. Does anyone have any tips?

up the vdimm to atleast 2.7-2.8 and see what happens. Also up the vcore another notch. All of those voltages seem low.

Dont you mean 2.8v not 3.8v!!! I think 3.8v in the ram would fry it...lol

Ahhhh lol you edited it just before i posted this...LOL

i was just trying to help somebody on here with this (angry mobo) someone suggested that the nforce boards just get very unstable past 250fsb and im starting to beleive it..those are some tight memory timings, maybe try loosening em up a little bit and up the vcore..
hope i helped good luck

For DDR2 the max set by the MoBo is 2.3v, try the 2.3v and 4-4-4-12 timings.

There could also be some features in the BIOS that helps the system to be faster but those features which if you overclock while those features are ON, then the system may become unstable.

So see if you can just diasable some of those features. I'm not familiar with any of the nForce 4 ASUS boards but mine does come with such featurers that I have to turn off to get a stable OC.

Also lock the PCI-Ex to 105 and PCI to 33.33mhz, turn (if available) Hyper Path, C1E off. Just look for more features in your BIOS.

I don't mean to offend you, but I'm just worried about those voltages. Since I'm using a DDR2 so shouldn't I be worried if I'm going above 2.1 volts?

timsvpr has quoted DDR voltages not DDR2 voltages.

Dont use 2.8v on DDR2

I changed my timings to 4-4-4-12 at 2.1volts and vcore at 1.5 and the best I can do is 3.8GHz with errors. I get rock solid stabiluity at 3.75. I suspect it could be my ram. The reason why is that when I set the timings to 4-4-4-8 (which is the recommended timing written on the sticker on the ram) windows almost always gets the blue screen error. But at 4-4-4-12 everything is ok. Even on CPU-Z, the timing table recommends 4-4-4-12. Is this problem common with OCZ rams?

The second suspect could be the temps. My ambient temp varies from 22c to 24c. My peak temps are always below 55c and my idle temps at 38c. However, my northbride temps, as shown by my fan controller is always at 46c on load (the temperature probe is located just under the heatsink the closest i can get to the chip). The temp on Asus probe is only 34c which i doubt is true. In my case, does it look like temps could be the culprit?

I've added screenshots of cpu Z in my next post i'm going to add pics of bios settings.

Is it a motherboard problem that the 4-4-4-8 timings don't work or do I have a dodgy ram? 4-4-4-12 works ok. I managed to tighten it to 3-3-3-9 at 250fsb. Memcheck86 did not find errors with the ram at 200fsb 266ram for 25 passes.
