Club3D 7900GTX - Why no max settings on Oblivion?!

Thread Starter
just got my 7900GTX today, quite pleased with it, massive step up from the 6200!

I can run BF2 on all high, no problem at all 60+ fps 24/7, but the problem is with Oblivion...

I reaslise it is probably one of the most demanding games out today, but my card is the newest, most powerful (next to a 7900 GX2) nVidia card there is.

My current settings for Oblivion are:

1024x768x32
No AA
No HDR
No Bloom
1 notch up from NO outside shadows
No self shadows
No tree canopy shadows
No window reflections
Blood decals on high (BLEED!!!)
Vsync off (kept droping the frames from 25 to 20 to sync with refresh rate of 60hz)
Textures large (does this use Vram or RAM? i have PLENTY of Vram)
Actor/item/object/grass fade - max
view distance - max
distant buildings/trees/etc - all on
grass shadows - off
shadow filter - off

I get about 35+fps in cities around people.
With AA on (x2 or x4) it drops below 30 when im near people
With bloom OR HDR on, it drops (25-30 with bloom 20-25 with HDR)

Please help. Why am i getting such low fps? im thinking its because of the 1Gb RAM

I've OC'ed from 650/1600 to 670/1720 (MAX 695/1800 but LOTS of artifacts)
Hit about 65c at load, 42 idle. Roughly same temps on the CPU.

help. please. quick. I have Oblivion very playable at my current settings, and doesnt look bad either, but i want to know why i cant have totally maxed settings. after going without AA with my 6200, i was looking forward to having 4x AA on Oblivion

help meeeee

EDIT: heres my benchmark scores:

3D Mark 01 - 23051
3D Mark 03 - 20691
3D Mark 05 - 7379
3D Mark 06 - 4862
Aquamark 3 - 68917 (11307 gfx, 8824 cpu)

Im sick of this ****... i had to put up with rediculously low benchies with the 6200, i shouldnt have scores this low with a bloody 7900GTX

That is odd. I have everything high or a little above with my setup... I can't see ram doing that much.

Well I only have a 6800gs modded to an ultra. You should do some benchmarking and come back with the results. something just doesn't seem right.

Your 3DMark 2001 score is really low... I got over 30,000, and I got over 90,000 on my AQ3 score. It looks like your CPU is bottlenecking your GTX, big time.

Edit: Also, use the 84.25 drivers. They're designed to work out some bugs the cards had with Oblivion.

Really? i thought it would be fine :/ 3.4Ghz isnt exactly slow... is it?

EDIT: I'd like to rant and scream and swear, but all that would do is probably get me banned, so wont..

This PC seems to constantly give me ****.... I was hoping to get some good OCZ RAM for £230, but looks like i need to save a bit more and grab a A8N32 SLi Deluxe + Opty 144 or 165. Depends on how long i can wait, and how much i decide to spend.

DAMMIT, i cant believe this is happening. its total bull...

your 3DMark01 is a bit low i think....the problem is your problem processor and ram...i will guarantee you will get good scores in 3Dmark if you do a couple things...first let me tell you...if i OC my 66GT a bit i get 19000-20k on mark01.. thats with 2 gigs ddr400 ( underclocked )..2.5ghz 3200+....i heard somewhere Nvidia said to get the full potential out of the highend 79GT XXXX whatever cards..you need a 2.6ghz AMD...this is so minimal bottlenecking will have an effect..

you currently have a 3.4ghz intel..heres a few numbers
Current:

Yours: 3.4ghz X 6 = 20.4 ( ops )
Mine: 2.5ghz X 9 = 22.5 ( ops ) ( to get my cpu performance ) you would need a 3.75ghz oc which is 3.75 X 6 = 22.5 ( ops )

now to get that 2.6ghz mark...

AMD : 2.6 X 9 = 23.4
Intel : 3.9! X 6 = 23.4

if you want the fully use your 79GTX you need to OC your proc to about 3.9ghz. idk if my numbers are correct using the operations per cycle of the current procs...correct me if im wrong...

now about the 2 gigs....its essential for a game of this caliber.. i would get this asap...with all the textures..blah blah...youd get a good boost for about another 100 bucks or whatever your ram cost you per dual channel gig.

remember when OCing...take it slow.....btw. about your earlier post.. you want that ASUS with 2 PCI 16 lanes...and an Opty.... + some OCZ...that is about as perfect as it gets....good decision there.

Just get a new motherboard. It'll be alot cheaper. Although, I'm not trying to deter you from leaving the dark side.
dont use software overclocking. go to your bios and get that thing workinga ta 3.8-3.9 with the stock hsf
get the latest nvidia beta drivers and then try it again

with my 6600gt and the same settings as ours iu get above 30 fps so you should be getting like 150 with that settings
