Club3D 7900GTX - Why no max settings on Oblivion?! - Page 7

i dont know if anyone covered this, but when you run driver cleaner pro.. you must do it in safe mode ..otherwise it will leave files that are still in use .. and use NFR with DCP

1. uninstall your current drivers
2 Run NFR ( nasty file remover made by nvidia )
3 restart into safe mode
4 run DCP ( restart )
5 install new drivers
5 defrag

Yup, the AM2 X2 3800+ sucks up a lot less power than the s939 does, which will leave plenty of power for your 7900GTX. That may be another problem. As effecient as the 90nm 7 series cards are, a 7900GTX is gonna suck up more power than a 6200. Are you sure your power supply can handle the extra load stabily?

I didnt realise AM2 was due to be released so soon!! i'll definitly wait then!

The reinstall went fairly well, no major problems. But i do have some problems.

I cant run 3D Mark 06, when it gets to the cpu test it goes back to the desktop, and the 3d mark window is all messed up, and has part of an error message on it which i cant read. it then sits there flicking between a black screen and the desktop.

Although i did gain a slight boost in AM3, 69k instead of 65k. I also have a lower commit charge after i boot up, which is always nice.

When i run dxdiag it passes all the DirectX and DirectDraw tests, but throws an error on the DirextPlay test. (error code 0x0004005)

I've not tryed playing any games yet, so hopefully they will still work. I've tryed reinstalling DX 9.0c and it doesnt do anything.

My power supply is more than powerful enough.

Yeah, I wondered if it was maybe a card problem to begin with, though. I mean, you were consistantly getting LOW benches and it was to the point that people with seriously lesser CPUs, RAM and GPUs were outscoring you. Not to mention, you couldn't play Oblivion at high OR low resolution

I can see how you may be bottlenecked at lower resolutions by your CPU, because your processor is used to calculate AI (which is very intense in this game) as well as audio (you said you had onboard), but what doesn't make sense is that as you start to offload your CPU onto your GPU with calculations specific to the GPU (AA, AF, HDR), it didn't get any better.

*shrug*, I agree that a single-core P4 will probably bottleneck with a 7900GTX, but I find it hard to believe that it would ever bottleneck it to 35% of what it should perform at, that just seems like wishful thinking for all those people that dropped a buttload on a shiny new dual core .

Anyhow, hope the RMA goes smoothly.

It should go alright, i've heard very good things about chillblasts customer support.

Im planning to get some of my money back and swap it for a BFG 7900GT.

The £180-£200 i should get back will bring me VERY close to being able to afford a new CPU, Mobo and case.

(with the money from my birthday. 16th may )

Whats the max OC i could get on a 7900GT without voltmodding it? Im just gonna go search for it now anyways

EDIT: If chillblast tell me they have no 7900 cards in stock ill just take a total refund and buy one from overclockers.co.uk... next day delivery ftw

You can change everything eccept the Motherboard. The windows XP is locked into the motherboard, but since your sucks alot (from what you are saying) go get a new one and argue with M$

good luck!

argue with MS? lol, ic ant be doing with the hassle

I can buy another OEM version from overclockers.co.uk for £50, or a full version for £200. Looks like my upgrading is gonna be on hold for a while till i get a job. oh well.

My sister said shes gonna give me some money, so ill buy me a Tt Armour case. That'll not only look cool, but will give me some decent cooling.

Cant get a new mobo till i have a new case anyway. my current midi tower only takes mATX boards. (as do all midi towers afaik)
