Opteron 165 Help with overclocking please.

Thread Starter
Alright, I've never done an overclock before. However, I have read several articles including the ones on here. I purchased my setup to OC' and have had mild success... however nothing comparible to what is said the Opteron 165 can do.

I am currently OC'd to 2.16Ghz stable.

I got it to 2.26Ghz but it would crash when using it.

Please view my profile for all the system specs. I will give a quick summary here though.

CPU: Opteron 165 (I don't know the stepping numbers)
MOBO: Epox 9NPA+ Ultra
GFX: Shappire ATI Radeon x850xt overclocked.
RAM: 2GB OCZ Platnium (Timings: 2-2-3-5)
PSU: Antec True Power 550 Watt
Harddrives: 5 harddrives (hehe)
2 250GB Sata-II's Raid-0
1 160GB IDE
1 120GB IDE
1 80GB IDE

Also some random pic cards, audigy 2, and wireless.

That's essentially my system, there are some more details in the profile.

However, I can not seem to get past 2.2ghz, I'm using the stock cooler, which seems to be giving fine temps. 35*C Idle, and low 40*C's load.

What i've tried to so far, is slowly moving the multiplier up by 1 mhz increments. Right now it is at 240.

245 Crashes
250 Crashes
260 Definatly crashes.

When I say "crash", I mean the bios reverts back to stock multiplier settings.

Im really not sure what to do.

I've tried upping the Vcore by as much as .25.

I've tried turning down the HT muliplier to as low as x3.

My ram WAS overclocked, so I returned to it to stock, and actually slowed it down. It's at 2.5 3 2 5 at 2T, it's supposed to be 2 3 2 5 ( I think ).

Other than that... I can't think of anything else to do.

CPU-Z current readings are as follows:

2160.2 MHz
Multiplier x 9.0
HTT 240.0mhz
Stepping: "2"
Voltage 1.934 v (That seems high... I think I must have forgotten to turn off the .25 + howerver it seems to be running fine.)

Any suggestions, or experience with this mobo and oc'ing would be great. I'm dying here!

-Greg

I think where you are having an issue with your memory. If you have your memory set to run at a 200MHz, that is setting it to a 1:1 ratio with HTT. So if you HTT is set to 240MHz your memory is set to run at 240MHz. You will want to run your memory on a divider, say 166MHz or so.

It will not benefit your system one little bit to have your memory running at a higher frequency then your processor. Lets say you have a water pump that can pump (memory) 100 gallons a minute and a water faucet (cpu) that can only discharge at 75 gallons a minute. The max that you will discharge will be 75 gallons because your pump is limited by your faucet. So keep you memory at a 1:1 ratio with your processor.

Drop that voltage also, 1.934 is way too high for that processor. Anything above 1.6 should not be necessary.

Awesome, that helped alot.

Currently at 2.340mhz according to CPU-Z

Memory is clocked down to 166mhz. However CPU-Z says it's frequency is 2.12Mhz...?

Ram is currently 2.5 3 3 5. It's capable of 2 2 3 5.

Also, I had to lower HT to 4X...

However my goal is to get to 2.5... possibly beyond? However 2.5 and I will be satisfied.

Any other suggestions to get a little more umpf!

Thanks for the quick response BTW. :

Yes running your ram on a divider was a good idea especially with 1gb modules. Also don't be scared to play with the ram timings and voltage a bit to maximize your OC. On the cpu side of things you will reach a point where you'll have to increase the voltage more, up to 1.5 volt is very safe for that processor, you can go higher than that as long as your load temps stay below 55C. A lot of people seem to find a sweet spot with these opty's at 1.5 to 1.55 vcore.

Sorry to double post, Also you have a great power supply, but there's a lot of stuff plugged into it evenyually power may be of a concern. Also don't forget to drop your HTT to 4 x or lower depending on your fsb speed.

1.5v and 1.55v is good if you have suffiicient cooling. im running @ 1.5v and my load temps are around 53C. this isnt that much, but too much for my liking. try lower volts first though. the dual cores tend to scale a lot better on lower voltage and less with higher volts. ie. my opty

1.35v (stock) goes up to 2.5
1.4v - 2.6
1.45v - 2.7
1.5v - 2.75

im stopping here for prime testing and waiting for better cooling.

The frequency is correct it is based off of your HTT. 166MHz divider is essentially setting your memory to run at 83% of the HTT. So if you have the HTT set to 275 with a 166MHz divider your cpu will run at 2475MHz (275x9)and your memory will run at 228MHz (275x.83). Once you HTT gets above 250 you need to switch HT multiplier to 3x.

Damn quick replies mates!

Ok, it is currently at 2520ghz. Running at 33*C?!? According to the program provided by Epox specifically for my MOBO... I can only assume it is correct...

Isn't 33*C too low for such an OC'? I do have tons of fans, with great air flow... but even i'm shocked. I'm going to put a thermometor inside the case tommorow... see if it reads similar to the case temps... make sure this program is reading correctly...

In it's defense the temps of my grahpics card are at 47-49*C which is the same as when it was at 1.8Ghz.

Also, the current HTT is 280 and HT is at x4... everything seems stable, however I have not run any stability tests yet. I'll put those on before bed.

Rounidng everything up:

2520Ghz
Vcore: 1.417-1.446 Volts
HTT: 280Mhx
HT: x4
Ram: 2.5 3 3 5 2T
Idle CPU Temps: 33*C
Idle Case temps: 39*C

If everything is stable by morning (2 Prime95's at the the same time + 100% allocation of ram on MemTest) should I continue to push this beast...?

Thoughts?

Definitely, see how far you can push it. Once you find your max cpu frequency then ease your memory up and see how far you can push it with your max cpu frequency. You should switch the HT to 3x, not only can it cause some stability issues it will show little or no increase in performance beyond 1000MHz.

Your idle temps are right in line, but it is hard to generalize because ambient temperatures vary so much. It will probably get to around 45c to 50c under load. Glad to see you have reached your goal, let the fine tuning begin.

That's good temps and voltages for that speed. As stated definitely lower your HTT to 3. I would definitely push further if she's stable in the morning and your load temps are good.
