I bet if somebody took the time to reserarch and write a faq on the stepping rating them from best to worst it'd get mad reps. Anyways good luck on the OC even if you only get 2.6 or 2.7 it's still a faster than an FX-60,

you can always get more out of your 170 by removing the IHS and/or putting it under water cooling.

its hard to determine the results based on steppings. its luck of the draw really. there are so many variables when it comes to AMD cpus in general. it seems older ones are getting better results then newer ones.

CCB1E - these will be the best, but are heavily coldbugged. they make up for it by being great OCers on air

again. most people with the best results have IHS off and under water cooling

MAN if you remove the IHS "BE CAREFUL" one slip and you might kill a core LOL. I wonder if you nicked one core if the other would still work? I doubt that water would yield you much better temps than your typhoon.

just another question. Whats PIB? How do I know if I have a PIB
PIB = Processor In a Box. Its a way for AMD to know if the processor was purchased "retail" or OEM.

with all the reviews ive read, the BT is as good as average water cooling like the Big Water and such. High end stuff like Dangerden would obviously give better temps.

as for removing the IHS, be VERY careful. chipping the core is the least of your problems because it sits in the middle, but the transistors and such on the out side are what you should be worrying about.

here is a great video tutorial on removing the IHS:
http://files.filefront.com/IHS_remov.../fileinfo.html

if you can successfully do this, temps will drop and you will able to get higher clocks on lower volts. im too chicken to do this because if i screw it up, i not only void the warranty, but the chances of me getting the same stepping is slim to none.

Steppings only give some information. They are not the be-all or end-all in a processor decision. One can not deduce from the stepping or revision just where the processor was situated in the processor wafer and this is just as important as stepping revision.

The end result is that a cherry stepping/revision that is situated at the circular end (outside track) of the processor silicon wafer will usually be a far worse overclocking chip than one situated at the beginning (Inside Track) of the processor silicon wafer.

This is why the more experienced and financially able overclocker will purchase more than a few of a chip, test them all, keep the best and sell the rest.
