SSD owners, "Must have App!"

Hi

The purpose of this thread, is to bring to the attention of SSD owners. To what I consider to be maybe the best App, as an SSD owner
Now don't let the name put you off
The App is Steam Mover! But it is so much more
With it, you can move any program or game. From your HDD to your SSD, and back!

You just select the "Location and destination" and click move
And this means, you can have all your games installed on a HDD. And move games "on and off" of the SSD when ever you wish
And so, the game of the "moment" is just where you want it!



I know its just using standard Windows commands to move files and set up a junction point!
But not every one knows how to do that!
Also, the App just runs, you don't install it

What about the folder that's left over in your original drive?

Does it contain anything?

All the data gets moved! Just the folder stays
Then when you move it back, the folder on the SSD gets deleted!
But you have to keep the folder on the HDD where the game was installed

As you know! Before we had to choose what games were going on the SSD!

The "folder" that's left over on the original drive is actually a special linkage called a Junction which makes the game and the OS think it's not been moved, so no uninstall and reinstall is required.

it creates teh junctions for you

Junctions are special NTFS constructs that make the program and the OS think the data is in one place when it's actually somewhere else

This way you can install the games onto your HDD, then when you decide you want to try them out on the SSD, you don't have to reinstall them into the new location, you can just use this app to move the data and create a junction.

And it also shows you the size of the folders as a convenience

I like this, it would be awesome for any games that are intensive on continuous texture and map loads. (anything sandboxish)

also allows you to have a single load time before you launch a game instead of long loads between levels.

does anyone know how cleanly it works? does it do a good job of putting things back without leaving trash around after?

oh well i love my game folders it seems to work just fine.. one of them is BF2, the others are older.

well the beauty of junctions is that unless someone really stuffs up there shouldn't be any junk really...

It simply moves the game folder then creates a junction back to the original place.

but I've not used it so cannot say (I just used the Link Shell Extension and junctioned manually)
