Greetings,
I'm seeing the same issue as the OP. Here are the facts:
* Mobo: MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum (using the NVIDIA nForce 750a northbridge)
* Video card: SAPPHIRE 100315L Radeon HD 6850
* OS: Windows XP 32-bit SP3 (yes, I know, I know... behind the times)
* Both monitors are (well, were) connecting to the card via VGA (using VGA-to-DVI adapters).
* One monitor has DVI-D. The other does not. However, I don't have any DVI cables lying around. I aim to rectify this via Amazon.com
* Both monitors work on the video card's first connector (the one on the left if you're looking at the back of your case straight on, if the case is on its side, or the one on the top if the case is upright).
* Neither monitor works on the video card's second connector. Also, usually, whenever I plug a monitor in, Windows XP will give me that, "Hey, you just connected something" sound effect. In this scenario, there is NO notification noise when I plug into that second port.
* I replaced two 8800 GTS 512MB's with this card. With the 8800's, my dual-monitor setup worked without a hitch. I had both monitors plugged into the primary card. (Sidenote: If you're looking to "upgrade" to an HD 6-series Radeon, and have an 8800 SLI config going, getting a 6850 won't help you performance-wise. In fact you may get 1% lower benchmarks on WinXP. I knew this going in; I did this strictly to cut down on the power, noise and heat while maintaining a similar level of performance but having the latest hardware revision. That mission is definitely a success, so far.)
* I first installed ATI's Catalyst package containing the Open CL driver (the one marked "Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) Technology edition). I probably should have just gone for the regular driver. Catalyst Control center did not ever appear upon reboot. Installing the Windows XP hotfix rectified this, and installed all the other stuff I'm used to seeing with an ATI (err, AMD) product. I'm likely going to just wipe out all the drivers and do it the right way to see if that works.
* My Google search turned out this somewhat helpful line in a user's product review for the same 6850 I have: "
As an aside, I couldn't get VGA output (for my second monitor) to work on one of the DVI ports. Swapping my main monitor to that port and putting the VGA monitor on the other port fixed that." (This is why I wish I had a damned DVI-D cable in the house.)
So that's where I'm at. OP, if you're connecting both monitors via VGA adapters, maybe that's the issue. If you've got a DVI cable lying around, use the DVI on one and the VGA adapter on the other. Maybe for some funky reason the card can't detect two VGA's at the same time? *shrug* I'm going to try the same. Also I'm going to see if it was my stupidity with the drivers that did me in. I'll report back.
