Opteron Dual Core Questions, 165 or 170

I think I want to upgrade from my 3800X2 to a Dual core Opty (need to get my rep up so I can sell it)...Which one should I go with, does one OC better than the other, and all this talk about steppings has me worried: Which online store is selling the best steppings Newegg or Monarch...Thanks

The opterons aren't really worth it for what you'll pay to get that little extra performance. For the amount of money to get a 165 or 170, you could easily buy a nice water cooling kit which will allow you to get that 3800 up even higher.

Well, doesn't the 3800 have 512k L2 cache per core? All the opterons have 1mb L2 per core, which will go a long way further than 512 when overclocked.

Yes, well $327 for more cache but lower clock speed is a little much. Besides, most applications don't fit in the cache, so you'll still be using the RAM a lot.

My 3800X2 wont go over 2.7 I believe its prob the chip limit, temps werent really a factor, anyways the 1mb L2 does make a difference compared to 512

I'd stick with what you have there to be honest. 2.7Ghz is a nice o/c and the extra cache makes a very minimal difference in the majority of apps. If you were upgrading from a single core then going for the Opteron might make sense, but I doubt you'll be able to tell the difference between the 3800+ @ 2.7Ghz and an Opteron @ 2.8Ghz when you're using them.

If you're determined though, try for a a CC1BE stepping. Mine can do 2.8Ghz at a push and 2.7Ghz on virtually stock volts.

You probably only need a better power supply (Aspire is always little risky) and better cooling to maximize that chip's potential.

You'll probably get a 165 or 170 to 2.7 also. maybe 2.8 2.9. Side by side, a X2 3800 and opteron 170 clocked to 2.7, the opteron will be the better performer. because of the L2 cache

Here you go. A compare with the X2 3800 and Opteron 165.
Compare
At the time the 165 was cheaper than the X2.
But from the looks of things, the 200mhz slower 165 is on par or slightly better in some instances than the X2, due to the larger cache. That difference would only get bigger with overclocking.

165 or 170? model doesn't matter as much as the stepping. CC1BE has been the best so far, though there are alot of CCWBE doing really well also. For the price difference I would go 165. Oh, I have gone 165
