I prefer MSI AfterBurner

A lot of 470s seem to be able to hit around 750 core on stock voltage. You should at least be able to get to 700 easy.
Afterburner is a solid program.

1) Jack up the fan to 100%.
2) Set the voltage to 1.067 or 1.087 (what ever the max safe V is for 470).
3) Bring your clock up, initially I would start around 680-700 and I would take 40mhz jumps between stress tests.
4) Use OCCT for stress testing with error checking on, you really need to watch your temps here and be ready to cancel if they get around 100C. If your temps are not out of control run 5-10 min tests between clock increases.
5) When you reach a point where you don't want anymore clock speed (800mhz was enough for me) Start to bring your V-core down ( this will further improve your temps) about 0.005 and stress test in between. The idea being you want the voltage as low as possible without getting any errors.
6) Create a custom fan curve in afterburner, you will want the fan to ramp up fast in the 70C range to protect against temp spikes.
7) Run a stress test with all your new settings keeping a close eye on temps for 20-30 min

I run a MSI 470 @ 800/1600/1800/1.050 on the stock cooler. My temps idle at 37C and load (occt) gets to 83C.

One thing about these cards is you need really good case airflow, I cannot stress this enough. I lost 10C just by getting an Antec 900.

Maxxa any reason why you just don't stress test with Kumbustor ?
it comes with Afterburner

I prefer it because compared to kombustor it raised my temps quite a bit
(10C-15C) when I was stress testing, the higher the temps, the more the card is working and the safer you will be during everyday use. I am not sure if Kombustor has any error checking built in either.

Thanks a bunch! I'm trying to overclock an ASUS GTX 470 (my 1st ever nVidia card!) and this is very useful!

The most widely used overclocking software is MSI Afterburner.
While overclocking, unfortunately there are no set voltages to use. It is all guess and check.
When you download MSI Afterburner, it also comes with a program called MSI Kombustor.
This software is used to test the stability of the overclock.
When I overclock, I increase the core clock in increments (varying by your choice) and then run a few minutes of Kombustor to test stability.
When you get to point where an overclock starts artifacting, or loses stability, increase the voltage by the next increment.
Here is an example:

Stock core - 600
Stock voltage - 1.0v

1st overclock attempt:
Core - 620
Voltage - 1.0v
Result - Successful

2nd overclock attempt
Core - 640
Voltage 1.0v
Result - Failed

3rd overclock attmpt
Core - 640
Voltage - 1.1v
Result - Successful

And so on.

Also remember to adjust the fan speed accordingly.
I try to keep GTX 470 temps, while overclocking, below 85C.
The volts you apply, the hotter the card will run.
