The Velociraptor is the only SATA 10K HDD.

There are many 10K and 15K SAS/SCSI HDDs. SAS/SCSI hard drives are used by servers and enterprises. These are the fastest hard drives. The latest Seagate Cheetah can hit 200MB/s sequential.

i had two of those cheetahs from an older dual xeon server, they were SCSI and had their own controller card, no one would buy em

So the number of writes really is the limit for these devices... unless you chuck them in storage... then again, if you put a HDD in storage for that long, the spindle might jam or seize.

My main rig before I had this one, I used SCSI Cheetahs as my 2 main drives, Windows/OS/Apps... an 18GB one...

Interesting thread.
I am starting to inform myself about SSDs because I want to buy one for my next PC (probably first months of 2011).
I was thinking of buying a 120GB one, it should be enough for me. It will be the only drive in the PC.
I use the PC mainly for gaming, browsing, multimedia and P2P, what worries me the most is the P2P.
Will it last long? SSDs are making continuous improvements so I'm kind of confused. =/

I've read that defragmenting is not good because it makes unneccesary writes on the SSD, unneccesary because it doesn't suffer from fragmentation?
Plus the controller tries to spread the work evenly through the cells (so that all cells are used in the same way), instead the defragmentation does the opposite, correct?
If there are two SSDs, one is 80% fragmented and the other is 10%, will there be any performance difference?

P.S.
I've read of the PCI-E SSD, they are really great! Better perfomance and two less cables, if I had one of those cable management would be a joke.
But they cost A LOT.

Defragmentation would only be useful in EXTREME cases, and even then it would probably be more useful to just backup-restore.

When I say extreme I mean mostly impossible scenarios where each file on the drive is in 50000+ pieces.

This scenario is basically impossible.

So yeah 10% vs 80% would not be a measurable difference.

10000% might be measurable.

Yes due to wear-leveling your data is not stored exactly as shown in the operating system bitmap, so defragmentation would cause the data to be moved around the drive, causing unnecessary writes.

PCI-E SSD is merely a convenience that allows you to use up a PCI-Express slot instead of SATA ports and Drive bays.
It's a PCI-Express SATA controller with a bunch of NAND chips on board, like two Sandforce drives on one board... (if you're talking about the RevoDrive which seems the only one that's worth buying at the moment)

How about on a Mac in a video production enviropment?

We are going to be recording HD-SDI uncompressed video on a Mac... we are talking file sizes in the 100 of GB each... how would a RAID of 15K SAS drives perform in comparison to SSD drives... I know the SSD option will cost a whole lot more ... but is it worth it?

A drive with great write speeds and read speeds it would be much faster if trim was enabled, most likely a sandforce 256gb or c300 256gb would perform very well.
