Conroe and 975X motherboard support info.

Not sure how many people have seen this:

Due to the different voltage requirements on Conroe/Kentsfield, the first batch of 975X motherboards manufactured before January of 2006 need a different voltage regulation module (VRM) to support Core processors. However, engineers have confirmed to us the P965, Q965 and G965 motherboards -- slated for release within the next few months -- will support Kentsfield without any problems.

Looks like the January and newer motherboards will support Conroe. The P5WD2-E Premium was released on January 20th of this year. So, think should mean that the Conroe will work with the P5WD2-E Premium.

ASUS Engineers have always be making things work that Intel said just wouldn't happen. So I have full faith in ASUS.

No, 975X motherboards do not support SLI setups.

Slated for release withing the next few months. The general rule of thumb seems to be any board released after the "Core" whitebook was released to manufacturers will work with Conore/Kentsfield. The board manufacturers building 965/975 motherboards have a big sticker that says "Conroe Ready" on the box. If it doesn't say "Conroe Ready," it's a crapshoot at best.

Question:

Are you saying that any 975X motherboard manufactured after January 2006 will be compatible with Conroe when it is released?

No...Intel changed the voltage specs for Conroe, so none of the current (that I know of) 975 boards will be compatible (though it's the same layout and socket). The good news for Intel is that the changes that mobo makers need to make will be minimal, so Conroe compatible boards won't start out being extraordinarily expensive.

I did some research. ASUS didn't include their 8-phase voltage regulator power design. At release, think was looked on as a negative by a lot of people, including Anandtech. And it doesn't really make sense why ASUS would put a less powerful voltage regulator on their newer motherboard when it was on the 945 and 955 motherboards. But, if you think about it, ASUS engineers could have done this to solve the Conroe compatability issue.

This could be so, however it is still a crapshoot until the Conroe is released and tested on that platform.

When you say Conroe-proof as a fact, you are in error. Possibly Conroe proof is the best you can, at this time, say in reality.

"Could" and "If" state possibilities and not fact. If my mother would have had nuts, she could have been my father. LOL

I contacted ASUS via the tech support and they said that Intel has not released much details on the Conroe specs to them. He said that we will have to wait until the Conroe is released to know if it will work on a P5WD2-E. If what he is telling me is the case, I wonder why?

All the major motherboard manufacturing companies receive technical specifications regarding the implimentation of the processor archtectures. This is followed by early releases to the manufacturers of pre-release silicon for testing.

All this is done with Non Disclosure Agreements (NDA's). You can be certain that any employees of companies that are signatories to NDA's (and especially with the heavy handed Intel bosses) will not release any information and certainly not from their offices via telephone, e-mail etc.

Not even one laugh at my "IF" - "COME" haha? Bunch of anal retentives

Looks like they have a Conroe running on a current 975X board:

You never know. You might have a board that will work. I did not say it wouldn't work. Just that my opinion was that it might very well not work and that I would wait to see one way or the other rather than purchase early and "Hope" it worked.

Time will tell.
