MSI Afterburner freezes my computer.

Thread Starter
Hi, I am running windows 7 x64. I have a geforce gtx 460. When I run afterburner which came with the card, half the time it freezes my whole computer, sometimes it does not. I am about to see if I have an old version.

The only thing I use afterburner for is is the automatic fan speedup thing, wherre if the card gets hot the fan speeds up, so Im wondering what other program I can use for that if I cant get afterburner working perfectly.

Thanks for the help.

PS. I had no idea where this post should have gone, sorry.

EDIT: It turnms out I have been using version 1.6, I am now downloading v2.
EDIT 2: The new version still freezes on startup half the time, if not most of the time.

Welcome to OCN

Please fill in your system specs in the UserCP.

Generally speaking, it's really hard to troubleshoot without knowing all your gear. This being said, is this a fresh install of windows? What type of card were you running before? Which model/brand 460 are we talking about?

Hi, I've updated my System specs.

This is a fresah install, Afterburner froze before as well.

My gfx card is an MSI card, this one: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...ONE1GD5OC.html

EDIT: This is the only card I've ever used Afterburner with.

Did you install the new version over the old one?

Maybe try removing AB completely, and then install the newest version.

What Nvidia driver version are you using?

My driver version is 258.56, I am now updating to 260.99.

I will remove Afterburner with Your Uninstaller, and reinstall.

I will report back with the results.

EDIT: The problem remains!

You have a reference 460 card?

Problem seems really strange.

I would suggest you might give the EVGA Percision a try, and see if you can work with it.

Do you get a freeze the moment you start the AB, or just as you twink the fan speed, or on restart?

Make sure you unmarked the voltage control in the options, and made sure the "OC on start" little button at the bottom of the AB screen, is not light up.

The program freezes the computer within one second of running it. Roughly half the time it works fine.

The voltage controls "unlock voltage controls", "unlock voltage monitoring", and "force constant voltage" are all unchecked (and always have been.)

This EVGA thing looks interesting, the only thing i use afterburner for is the automatic fan speed adjustment if the card gets hot, does evga do that?

EVGA Precision is perfect, I'm uninstalling Afterburner now.

Thank you.

If I remember correctly, it does.
Give it a try.

Also, if you reinstalled AB, did you delete the installation folders from the program files directory before installing again? It saves profile information there.

Yep I deleted those. I've no interest in figuring it out though, EVGA works like a charm. Thanks for telling me about it.
