Harder to find drivers...some stuff just plain doesn't work...
Stick with regular XP Pro until Vista comes out...

64 bit Windows XP (x64) has almost zero advantages over regular Windows (x86) because it is basically just a patched version of XP, the only benefit really is the ability to use more RAM (LOTS more) if you want a true 64 bit OS that's free I highly reccomend Ubuntu Linux, thats what I run.

And yes you have to buy XP PRO x64 which costs alot of money.

It's not so much about it being 64-bit (at least in the case of AMD) as it is about the architecture. A 2GHz 939 AMD64 is head and shoulders above an Athlon XP 3200+ at 2.2GHz. It has for more memory bandwidth available, and reduced total memory latency due to the memory controller being on the CPU die rather than in the northbridge, like former designs.

Windows XP Pro 64-bit edition was the biggest mistake I ever made. I'm back to XP Pro SP2 32-bit. The earlier comment about rarity of drivers was dead on.

Microsoft (Small and Limp) don't even provide a simple keyboard driver for their own brands of keyboards (MS Digital Media Pro, to be exact). How ridiculous is that???

Sideburns is right, stick with XP Pro until Vista.

The lack of drivers is what put me off recently getting the 64-bit edition for my Athlon 64 set up. Vista will create it's own problems but will be, as Microsoft monopolise the market, the major OS so driver support is guaranteed unlike a OS that's probably only going to get support until Vista comes out.

I read some old articles online which said it was once possible to get the free update from XP Pro to the 64 Bit edition but Microsoft don't do it anymore so you'd have to buy a new copy.
