Help Please... Hdd Serious Problem :*(

So I turn my PC on this a.m. and it took forever to boot. Weird. Then when it did I tried to go in my "D drive" and it said its not formatted. I hope not, it has butt-loads of stuff on it. Do you want to Format? NO NO NO!!

So I reset and it wouldn't boot

"Please insert boot disk... blah blah"

I reset and no joy. "***", I says. I turn off power and unplug... no joy.

I open my bad boy up and the fans are working. I disconnect my second hdd and it boots. I plug it back in and fails to boot again. Why if the second hdd is bad, does the primary not boot? The second hdd is "clicking" every like 5-10 seconds. Not loud, but noticeable *gulp*

Hooked it into my wifes PC, same thing ---> No boot.

Oh its an PATA hdd. I had in Master/Slave on same ribbon cable. Changed to Cable Select and it would boot, but no "D drive" after boot

I am seriously desperate. There is a lot of stuff I don't want to lose on that hdd. I just need it to work long enough to back up stuff to DVDs!!! Then I will chunk it.

I've had the hdd for 2 years no I think with no probs... I think that it is because I turned off the PC I always leave it on...

Please tell me there is something I can do. PLEASE.

I dunno if this is helpful, are the jumper settings right on the back? try a diffrent channel, and a diffrent ribbon cable. I swear there is a way of rescuing partitions, but im not sure how.

Yes, the jumpers are correct. Like I said. I've had this set up for a long time.

Problem just all of a sudden happened when I turned on PC

Nothing changed. I don't know.

I would really like help (good or bad news)... Should I be optimistic

(I'm at work... dreading going home and stomping my PC )

Bad, bad news. That hard drive failed, and the reason why Windows would not boot with the two drives on one cable is likely because the controller attempts to access both devices attached to it and fails to do so. Data recovery from a failed hard drive by a professional company is normally not very cheap.

However, there is a trick that might work in cases like this: put the failed hard drive in a zip-lock bag in the freezer for a few hours. The connect and try to boot and IMMEDIATELY copy all important data over to your good disk. There is no guarantee that this trick works, and if this works it probably might just buy you enough time to copy your data of the failed disk.

If this trick does not work, and the data is really really important, then professional services are available, but those are very expensive (hundreds of dollars)

Huh? He cannot see the failed drive in Windows. When master/slave: no boot. When cable select the failed drive is ignored and Windows boots fine, but of course the failed drive never shows. I'd be pretty surprised to see the drive show up in disk management.

If they both show in disk management, then try to right click on the drive and bring it online. DO NOT follow any instructions if it tells you to format.

The freezing option is a last resort thing. I don't know exactly the reason, but there are quite a few people for whom this trick worked (if you do a google, you can find a bit about it). However, this is a last resort issue, and based on what you told us I was pretty convinced your drive was toast.

First, keep trying to get it online in windows. If you can access it, IMMEDIATELY copy all data. I am still sure the drive is failing, so get a backup.

screw windows... the question here is does your bios see if.. if your bios sees the drive then there is a chance for you how good of a chance not to sure but thats the first place you look.. i would take the drive and seperate it put it as a master and put on the secondary id.. remove all other drives from the system.. optical and other uneeded drives.. then boot up .. check see if it reads it.. best way is to goto the bios and try to autodetct the drive
