Depends on what you're doing, some games will run your cpu near full load, and of course rendering and things of that nature take a lot from your cpu.

As was suggested to my by sizzle, I suggest you also run IBT (Intel Burn Test) as well at max. It definitely stresses my cpu more than p95 does. Sizzle recommended I do a 20 run pass once I had a stable oc.

I can pass 20 passes IBT, but Prime95 Blend failed...

I tried bumping the vcore and Prime95 stopped responding after 2 hours? Anyone know what thats from?

Settings right now.

200 x 20 - 4.0 - Ram @ 1600 2:8 (1.65v)
CPU Vcore - 1.33v bios (1.31v idle - 1.364v load)
CPU VTT - 1.32v bios (1.30v idle - 1.31v load)
CPU Clock Skew - 200

I wont settle for less than 4.0.... Temps right now in the low 60's under IBT, mid to high 50's Prime...

Any suggestions?

When it happened to me --I increased V-core and vtt a bit. Iirc you don't enable LLC? Any particular reason? Not trying to start a pro/con LLC thread but I have never had much success getting a stable OC without employing it. With it enabled I can use lower volts and the resulting lower temps are a win/win for me.

Only option I have is for "EVGA Vdroop Control" I can select "With Vdroop" or "Without Vdroop"

I have it for "Without Vdroop" and it causes a raise in vcore from idle to load. "With Vdroop" and it drops from idle to load.

So in Giga terms LLC is enabled and TBH if it wasnt for the 775/1156 mounting options on this board I would have gotten a GA P55..
I didnt have to buy new mounting for this...

My LLC enabled causes less of a drop in v-core volts under load and less input of v-core into the BIOS to achieve an overclock. I did not do much experimentation to see what this rig would do without LLC coz my experience has always been good/better using it- ie lower volts to run an overclock.

My Q9650 ran crappy without LLC and this hardware seems to respond well with it. So, I use whatever method lets me get the speed I want with the fewest volts in BIOS

Same here, I ran it with my q9550 as well, needed less vcore in bios, therefor less idle voltage, less idle heat and the end result was the same...


This board I just have to monitor as it actually raises vcore at load...
I tried to disable it to see how much vdroop I had and I got a BSOD in a few seconds of Prime...

I dont mind it, just really hope I dont have to electrocute this cpu to stabilize.. Its looking like I may need close to 1.4v to get 4.0 stable

I am messing with the CPU Clock Skew a little now.. 100 didnt work, going to try 200.

volts is BIOS doesn't mean squat. Actual voltage is CPU-Z is what counts. LLC lets you set a lower vcore in BIOS to achieve the same voltage than without. Causes a warm fuzzy feeling as you get to enter a lower number in BIOS. 1.25v under load is 1.25v under load rather you are setting 1.35v or 1.23v in BIOS to achieve it. Jusy saying.....

I use IBT to get me close to stable then move onto Prime 95. 12 hours of Prime Blend is a better stability test than 20 runs of IBT Max. If I'm testing to find my lowest stable vcore I do not want to have to run 12 hours of Prime with every change. IBT is just my favorite quick test and it is just my opinion that 20 runs of IBT set on MAX just about always puts me very close to Prime 95 stable. I have failed Prime Blend after 20 runs of IBT max and actually expect to though.

I know what you were saying... Just making sure it didnt get misconstrued through the pages...

IBT is great to find your max temps, and for quick tuning to get an ideal of where an OC is at...

Prime Blend is a tough test to pass.. I have passed 50 runs of IBT, 12 hours Prime small fft's and still failed a Prime blend.. A tweak to my Ref voltages stabilized it...

For the A70 naysayers, you should at least take a look at the reviews. The A70 was unpopular and sold poorly when it first came out because it was overpriced at around $70. Is it a Silver Arrow, NO. In reviews it does edge out the megahalems, comes within 1 degree of a VenX and is only 4 degrees behind a Silver Arrow though. 90C @ 1.32v = "It's the Cooler" , I have my doubts about that.

I like my A70 and can't wait to put some real fans on it. That I only paid $31.99 for it is just icing on the cake.

Good to know that someone else has faith in this cooler. I bought it mainly because of the reviews. It was much cheaper than other coolers and performed close to the more expensive ones.. I figured no more than I'm asking of it, it should be fine.

I haven't given up on it yet. I plan to check the pins today to see if that could be the culprit. This is something I havent heard of before. So its possible. If that turns out to be the case what is the solution? A new Mobo or new CPU?

Also right now i'm at 4.01 GHz with 1.24v in the bios and 1.192 under load. It's still not quite stable but after running 2 hours of p95 the max temp was 78. So thats a good start!

Edit: Also I didn't use the resister the fans are spinning, and the are in push pull configuration. I have them set so that the rear fan pulls cold air in hits the first a70 fan and exhausts through the second fan and then all the hot air gets exhausted by the top fan along with all the other case air..

I have seen a bent pin causing bad temps before here on OCN not too long ago. Guy tried everything including replacing the CPU and still had bad temps. Turned out one little bent voltage pin was the culprit. You can bend it back by inserting the pin in the end of a mechanical pencil and very carefully moving it back into place. They break off easily and it's not too hard to make things worse so very carefully are the key words. Not easy to do. The only other fix is to send the board back to the manufacture for a socket replacement or to buy a new board so it is worth a shot if you have a bent pin. CPU should be fine but a bent pin could leave a buren't spot on it that would need to be carefully cleaned.
