I'm usually suprised if I get good temps on the first try.

@ h3fty. Doesn't look like that Antec case has the best airflow so temps are about what I'd expect if not a little better.
The 4Ghz profile was actually a pre-made one by overclockers as it was a pre-built system bundle... They have the Vcore at 1.4V, 191x21, and everything, and I mean EVERYTHING on AUTO, I have to disable things myself and still - bad temps.

I'm in work now but I'll update tomorrow after I've remounted the Cooler.

I can see you had a 3.4Ghz stable, can you remember the FSB-multiplier and Volts?

Hello all!

I'm new to the forum (and OC'ing in general) but I figured this was the best thread for issues I'm having. Spent the last few days OC'ing my 760 and I thought I had it stable at 3.7Ghz. I ran Prime95 for 6.5 hrs with no errors, so I thought huzzah! Today I turn my computer on and it failed to post. Either my monitor and power switches wouldn't respond or it would restart 4 times and start at default settings (part of the mobos OC safety features). A couple times it would get to BIOS and give me a blank blue screen and then freeze. I managed to get it started and reset to my OC state. As a test I would get to windows, shut down (not reset) and restart. It would start fine until I got the idea to unplug, wait to clear any residual power, then start again (I guess to simulate extended periods of not being used). When this was done, the problems came back. I don't know what could be wrong since it passed all the stress tests I gave it with flying colors. Below are my system specs (with my OC specs included). Thanks!

Seems like someone else was having about the same problems. You 2 should compare specs and settings and see what you have in common.

Did you try clearing CMOS when you were having trouble getting it to POST ?

Hard to say what it could be though. Really could have just been a bad overclock with only 6.5 hours of PRIME behind it. Which PRIME95 were you testing with ?

Load default setting and see if you can replicate the error again at stock. If so you have a hardware problem and I'd lean towards RAM on that. If not it's something in your overclock. First thing I'd try with that is bumping your VTT. Either that or lower the baseclock.

Thanks for the quick reply! I tried looking in this forum for the other person but couldn't find em. I'll try again. To answer your questions: I did clear CMOS when I was having problems getting to POST (it was the only way to get there actually). I am running ver. 25.11 build 2 of Prime 95 for Windows 7 64 bit. I didn't know 6 hrs was a short time for it, I thought that was what I needed to make it to. Hmmm. I tried replicating the error on default settings and it worked fine 100%. I enabled OC Genie and had a problem the first time, but strangely after I decided to wait 10 sec after replugging the computer, it worked 5/5 times. I think I just had bad settings, but I am confused as to why the computer would run perfectly fine with the settings, but not start up. If it helps, I will include the OC Genie settings below. Thanks again!

OC Genie settings:

RAM Timing: 8-8-8-24
Ram Ratio: 2:8
QPI: 16

Oh wow that is one ugly overclock that OC Genie set for you. I wouldn't put too much trust in that thing.

By which Prime test I just meant Blend or small ffts or large ffts. I was thinking that though small is a good test I will usually run it and then run Blend if not large and then blend. Blend seems to be the most stressful and gives the RAM a good workout where as Small really doesn't. 10-12 hour minimum for me.

If the problem is on the uncore side of things sometimes it just won't show up in a stability test if it is just slight. I remember one overclock that I thought was rock solid that I had tested the $*!T out of causing me problems but only when specific things were going on at the same time. F@H, Teamspeak, & BC2 LOL. Sometimes daily use is the ultimate stability tester.

At POST there is a bunch of diagnostic tests that run. Most likely whatever the problem it was showing up in one of those tests. Sometimes though just after a hard BSOD you will just have to clear CMOS no matter what. I've had one of mine BSOD when nearly stable, didn't have any trouble posting went back into BIOS changed my profile back to one I new was absolutely stable and it even ended up unstable. Cleared CMOS and the trouble was gone. Sometimes that is just the way the ball rolls. I clear CMOS alot when working on a new clock just to guard against that sort of thing. I'm getting really good at resetting the clock.

As a precaution I'd run about 12 hours of memtest86+. I have seen a person about drive themselves crazy trying to figure out a cold boot problem and it turned out to be a stick of Corsair going bad on them. Hopefully that isn't the case.

Oh ya, update BIOS. Should probably have suggested that first.

well.... might as well post my info.

chilled water cooling... TPower i55.
had my rad in direct air path of a window a/c unit. temps during benching stayed around 23c at load... have since moved into a new home.... so now going LN2 / Dice with my K|ngp|n F1 Gemini LN2/Dice pot on the Tpower i55 and Tpower i45 and X58a-UD7 Rev 1

held the #1 and #2 spots on 2D benching on HWBot with this chip for a bit.. but have since been beaten on a few benchmarks..

Are you running it on high, don't use that resistor that they send with it. Fill out your system specs. What kind of case do you have and how is the airflow. Feeding that A70 plenty of fresh air will make a difference.

.02v Vdroop is good, very good.

Assuming you have tried lowering that vcore down and the 1.312v is your lowest stable point. Alot of people like 20 for these i5's but I'd suggest trying another multiplier if that is the lowest you can get it stable at 20. 21 worked for me, 22 would be worth a shot. 19 would be pushing the baseclock too high to be optimal IMO but you could always try it I've been wrong before.

You should go ahead and lock in your memory settings, as well as Dram Voltage and CPU PLL.
ofc its XP! Ive used win7 for 2 days, dont like it too much and i have 3,5GB of ram @ winxp so its not that big of a loss.

I have switched directions of some fans in my case and my temps got a little bit lower (3-5C).I know that antec p182 isnt too good for airflow but it looks cool

Why should i use the resistor they sent me? Should i use one fan as CPU and the other one as CASE fan? I mean on the connectors on the mobo.

To get somewhat stable 4.2ghz @21x200 i had to use almost 1.4v and i tested it just for a while, like 5mins. Is it worth it? Any other voltages i should increase?

I forgot to mention, my DRAM voltage is 1,6.
What value should i use for CPU PPL? The standard lowest one instead of leaving it on auto?

Thanks for help.

3-5C drop from moving some fans around is a sweet drop that didn't cost a dime. Don't use the resistor, it will slow the fans down. I have mine on the supplied Y and plugged into the CPU fan header. Works for me.

Can't see 4.2 being worth 1.4v. That just seems high. That is 1.4v in CPU-Z under load ? Or is it BIOS setting ?

CPU PLL 1.8v should be a good place to start. I would be very hesitant to go over 1.88v. Don't rule out going under 1.8v for better stability too.

Dram Voltage 1.6v. What are your sticks rated at ? If the sticks are spec at 1.65v you might get better stability by raising that.
