Newish 965BE build, needs cooling help

New components:
- 965 BE, C3
- MSI 890FXA-GD70
- CNPS10X Quiet
- 2x 2Gb OCZ DDR3-1600 Gold
- MSI n460GTX Cyclone 1Gb
- 3x 1Tb Seagate 7200.12

Reused bits:
- Corsair VX450W
- Antec SLK3000B midtower
- 2x 120mm Antec Tricool for intake + exhaust

This was possibly the easiest build I've done so far, having gone from SocketA/NF2 to S939/NF4. I installed the CPU, then RAM, then the cooler, dropped the board into the case, screwed it down, installed the GTX460, attached the power and chassis wiring and fired her up.

I chose to leave the RAM at the default 1033MHz and installed Windows 7 Ultimate with no fuss. Loaded the drivers and figured out how to get the RAM up to 1600 (just select 1:4 and give it 1.65v). No hassles! The next day I played SC2 for an hour with no problems.

Obviously, I had to try and figure out AM3 overclocking, since my last efforts with my NF4 setup weren't too great. I could get the old 4400+ 2.2GHz CPU stable at 2.5GHz, but the DDR400 RAM wouldn't touch the higher clock. So last night I set the RAM back down at 1333MHz 8-8-8-24 and pushed up the CPU multiplier up to 18.5 (I'm trying just a 10% OC). No problems there, the PC booted and ran P95 for 45min without failing. I was a little perturbed to see the CPU's temp climb to 62C (fan at 1000RPM), so I raised the fan speed to 1300RPM and the temp dropped back down. At stock settings, with the fan at 1000, the CPU hangs around 41C. I then went for 17x 220MHz (memory running at 1467MHz) and ran OCCT for 15min just to see if it was happy with this. No issues and the temps stayed under 59C.

I'll be satisfied if I can get the rig running stably at 17x220MHz, since I will be using the PC for gaming and surfing. I don't think I need to be too concerned if the memory stays at 1467, 8-8-8-24.

I'll drop the graphics card to another PCI-Ex16 slot, since there's currently only about 2-3cm between the card and the CPU fan. If this doesn't improve temps, then I'll need to investigate adding an extra fan to help the CPU cooling (before I go so far as to buy a new case)

Any suggestions please, other than spending money on a different CPU cooler?

You might want to set up a push pull on your CNPS10x, I have never broken 55 with my 10x performa in push pull. I can max OC at 3.8, and never break 55.

Thanks, I'd thought of the same idea today. Of course, it seems that the Quiet model doesn't provide clips for a 2nd fan and I should've opted for the Flex instead, with a pair of silent push/pull fans. But I'm even willing to ghetto-mod a 'pull' fan onto the cooler as a test.

or just replace the fan with a...

its a 140mm fan but uses 120mm mounting holes. they make the best fans.
