worth it to buy 7900GTX over 7900GT?

Yeah I went and bought the 7900GTX (just hasn't arrived here yet), but for the price was it worth it to get this over the 7900GT? Also how long do you think it'll last before it becomes mid-range or even a low range card? I want it to last until at least next summer after DX10 gets some time behind it, then I'll try to go get the 8 series cards and Windows Vista.

Well i can tell you now that wa a good Purchase and has a large advantage over the GT version of that card. I t will be a little while atleast before that becomes a midrange card mate.

If you're willing to volt mod the 7900gt, I think it's a better buy. If you aren't willing to volt mod, I'd exhange the 7900gtx for an x1900xtx. You should find it slightly cheaper and it's a slightly faster card with better graphic quality. On the down side, it does consume more power and does generate more heat.

yeah I was thinking of the x1900xtx but I didn't like the thought of the heat and power usage . . .

Well that card does Produce a little more heat but the performance gain is very good. It does use a little more power as most ATI cards do..but your PSU will be fine with it.

I'm pretty happy with mine. I upgraded from a 7800gtx (256 mb) to my current card and my performance increase was excellent. Also, you have an SLI board, so why even consider ATI? I have an SLI board because I'm planning on getting a second 7900gtx very shortly. If that is also the reason you went that route, then either a 7900gt now and a second down the road or the same path with a 7900gtx. Two 7900gt's are supposed to be smoking fast (beating the top ati card btw).

I have the 7900GT, and it is great, but I want to be able to play max settings at 1600x1200 on my new 24" widescreen (which a 7900GT can't). So I am going to step up to the 7900GTX.

7900GT is great. So is 7900GTX (those can be vmodded too)
I'd stick with nvidia for their 90nm parts...cause they overclock like a mother.

You're saying that 7900gtx still have a lot of overclocking headroom left? You do realize that the 3rd party manufacturers begged Nvidia for a 700mhz core, but the core couldn't handle it? I can't agree with you that they have excellent overclocking. Just yesterday on this forum, there's a post of a 7900gtx artifacting at any clocks over 670mhz.

It's not really fair to compare 2 video cards to one. It's a lot more money to buy 2 7900gts instead of 1 1900xt or xtx.

The core couldn't handle it on the voltage nVidia runs through them. The G71 core has been overclocked past 800MHz with enough voltage running through it. I believe the 7900GTX has plenty of overclocking headroom left.
