Round 6 Fan Testing (Working Thread) - Page 7

Strange about the motor tick with the R4. I have 2 of them on my rad and even putting my ear right next to them I don't hear any kind of tick whatsoever. Only sound I ever hear from them is the sound of air.

Yeah, tick is probably a strong word. It's not quit a tick that you hear common to 38mm fans, but you can hear some sort of electrical noise that's not a constant like wind or air which would lead me to believe it's motor releated. Check out the video using headphones if you want to hear what I'm talking about.

NOISE BLOCKER PL-2

This fan was also sponsored by vhaarr

PACKAGE
This was very premium in terms of packaging, all sort of goodies included. Custom rubber gasket system with studs and thumb nuts. Also comes with two sleeved wire lengths. It really went all out in accessories.

NOISE LEVEL
Fairly similar to the yate medium, perhaps a hair lower at the bottom end and a bit higher at the upper end, but the differences were less than 1dBA which is probably within testing error and within the 3dbA (barely perceptible) range. This is good

NOISE QUALITY
A fair amount better than average. No abnormal resonance peaks, no motor ticks, just a very smooth wind sound type noise. I think it's better than the yate in it appears they use a flatter blade type to soften the noise chop type sound.

EFFICIENCY
Not as good as the yate medium

CFM per RPM
Also not as good as the yate medium, flatter/straighter blade type may be more tuned for case type fan duties.

OVERALL
Cost is a real bummer on these, but they do have very good noise qualities and a load of packaging goodies if that's important to you.

About average noise level, better than average noise quality, premium packaging, and high price.

I don't know comparing that video to my fans I don't hear any kind of electrical noise at all. I can hear it a little bit in the video, but only when I cranked it way up. Guess our ears just perceive things differently.

Yeah, I'm sure we do. Audio of fans is extremely subjective, that's why I've gone with the video routine....it's the closest thing to letting you listen for yourself. I'm also listening to the uncompressed wave files on my end, so we do loose a little resolution of the audio when it gets compressed and uploaded to Youtube. Regardless, the H1 is extremely sensitive...I can probably hear things better with it than I can with my own ears..

Doesn't matter what I think as long as you're happy...that's all that matters

Wow it seems no fan has yet to beat the Yate in all three categories at once.... will this continue?

FYI, all done with batch #2.

The fans in dark green is all I have on hand that's left to test. My bigger PPCs order wont be here until next Friday...soo slow. I should probably get a smaller SVC order in though, so maybe a couple of new fans to include with the remaining old retests this next weekend.

Cheers!
Martin

The GT probably will, at least my wonky old batch GT did...even if it did give my wildly differing results each time.

Hopefully they haven't changed the production of the newer GT batch any more than no longer including the wire sleeving..

We'll see...I think my GT14 from SVC should be here before the weekend. They are always extremely fast from where I live. Usually at my door in only a few days..

FYI,
I'm not going to spend much time on formatting, since this will change as I add more fans, but here is a quick combined noise level vs CFM chart....for you viewing pleasure..

But in context of the "It takes 3dbA to perceive a noise level change", really REALLY tight. Most of these results are within 2-3dbA which the human ear simply can't distinguish. It's no wonder why there are so many arguments over fan noise..
