Xbox 360 - price cut, HD-DVD drive at E3?

The 360 will get a price cut come October, just before the PlayStation 3 hits the shelves. The Premium system, currently at $399, will get a $100 price drop down to $299. The Core system, which comes in at $299, will get $80 knocked off the price and will then be at $219. Compared to the anticipated retail price of the PS3, which is around $499, these look like pretty good prices.

I think it's cause their sales aren't doing as good as they had expected...

I may get one eventually...just cause I like to chill back, and play with my Real Life friends...lol.
I hate havin a girl over, and she can't play games with me, cause I only have 1 controller s for xbox and 1 for ps2...and obvs only a keyboard and mouse for the computer....I may just pick one up eventually...maybe after the NEXT price drop...for multiplayer goodness.

Thats Simply Due to Poor sales IMO. When PS3 comes out they Will either use this to an advantage to gain more sales because they are cheaper or prices will fall more. Doubtfull though as its already dropped $100.

These are of course only rumors, so don't take them as fact any more than the speculation we create ourselves here. My thoughts on the rumors:

1. I do expect there to be a price drop to try and take the wind out of the PS3 launch, but I think that $100 is an awfully big price drop for a new system. It's simply unprecedented. I would have expected no more than a $50 drop, which is still pretty good; it's almost the price of a game, which is better than having them bundle some poor selling game without dropping the price. But anyway, I doubt that a real price drop amount has even been set yet; there is no motivation to do so until we know exactly when the PS3 will launch and for how much. See #2...

2. Given the recent articles about how the PS3 is not even close to production ready, I'm not buying that a November launch for the PS3 is written in stone, myself. And $499 might be too low an estimate given the known $615 Japanese price. If Sony misses Xmas or the PS3 costs a lot, dropping the X360 all the way down to $320 is leaving money on the table. But I suppose if any company could absorb that, it is Microsoft.

I have yet to see a Xbox 360 on a store shelf, only place i've found that has them in stock on-line is EBgames and they are selling rip-off deal at $499(100 bucks overpriced), i want a 360 but i'm holding off till the hard drive verision is down to 300 or less.

but back to the point, MS can cut the price all they want right now they are barely making enough of them to meet demand.

Also hear God of War will be coming out at the same time as that price drop, I think god of war is going to be a sleeper hit at E3 at one point it was supposed to be a "launch window" game but I think MS smartly said "take your time guys and make this THE killer shooter for xbox 360", which more or less gave them 1 extra year to polish the game. I would expect tons of hands-on time for this game at E3, and people will be raving.

the big question is Halo 3? makes no sense to drop a mega-bomb of GoW in Oct to spike demand just prior to PS3(assuming if makes it to the US this year) only to drop Halo 3(maybe 2.5...halo 2 would could be improved on with 360)

$100 isnt that much, after a year the console came out. If you google xbox 1 price drops, you will see xbox 1 also dropped $100 right after e3.

you might want to wait until next year because MS is releasing a NEW CPU for the XBOX360 they are making it 65nm or something.

to reduce the heat and maybe make it faster.

It's not going to go any faster. Reducing the die size primarily reduces manufacturing costs (because they can get more full chips off of one silicon wafer). There are usually heat reduction benefits as well, but that's not a reason to hold off on buying an X360.
