Can some one explain Intel motherboards?

I'm an AMD guy and I always have been...I may go back once the AM2's get tested fully. However, i know I need to upgrade (well not "need"...but I want to like hell ) and the Conroe will be released first and will probally better at first as well. I have been doing my research on the CPU and I think I have a good idea how the CPU will work out. However...

I just realized I haven't built a Intel machine since the P3's...I have no clue what these chip sets are capable of now-a-days. I would like one that SLI or cross-fire ready and give me all the options that a DFI NF4 chipset would.

Is there such a thing? I'd also be interested in some good non-SLI/Cross-Fire options.

There should almost be a sticky of this...or at least a FAQ. I believe in the near future there maybe many more AMD guys that will be making the switch. Plus the Dell people may wish to replace their mother boards as well one day so they can do some thing with them.

The only reason most AMD guys are AMD guys...is cause they are going with what performs best. If Intel performs best next round...a lot of AMD guys are going to be Intel guys...most don't even care.

Really...I think I would fall into this catagory as well...and I believe the Conroe will beat out the first AM2's. I am not going to make any guesses as to what the "End Game" will be like. We'll have to see if AMD can get it's reverse HT figured out. That will be hard to beat, though I am sure Intel is already working on some thing. I love the fact that there are two CPU manufacturers.

But any way, I need some pointers on where to start with north bridge chips in Intel systems. Though I wonder if the Conroe will require a totally new chipset to work? I am thinking from what I have read that the Conroe will work on current 1066 FSB chipsets.

Its always good to have more than one manufacturing firm of anything lol otherwise there would be no incentitive to innovate and a complete absence of competition Shoots evil daggers at Microsoft. Anywaiz, I agree with Sideburns that most of the AMD's are just bandwagon guys in that they rave about the best performing technology. I would too if I didn't have such a bad experience with the AMD K6-2. After that, I just went back to Intel and stayed there.

The only gripe I have with Intel was with their early prescott series which were absolutely dangerous in temperature. When I had my first prescott processor and looked at the temperature for stock cooling, 50 cel idle, I was literally expecting the stock heatsink to burst into flames

Anywaiz, I think that you can never go wrong with Intel as they have been around for a long time and outlive pretty much all competition. Might be overpriced at times and not the top performer, but it is just a safety blanket for me.
