Why is PC800 Rambus still so expensive?

Anyone know why PC800 Rambus still cost and arm an a leg 6 years later?

I have an Old 423 socket 1.8Ghz P4 that is running 256mb of Rambus and looking to increase it's performance. Figured that 256 these days is a tad low.

I can buy a gig of DDR memory for the price of 256MB of Rambus.

What's up with that? It's $200 minimum in eBay to get into 1gig of Rambus 800. If you can even find it in retail it's more than that. Just rediciculous.

It may be 800 MHZ, but I have DDR400 in my x2 AMD that benches circles around the Rambus in my old P4. (Might have more to do with better CPU than Memory, but still....twice the price for 1/4 the Ram?)

I'm shocked to see it's still very expensive 6 years later.

It's about the same price for me to trashcan the CPU, MB and memory and buy all new using DDR400 for a barebones upgrade to the Old PC.

Does Sony have Rambus manufacturers cornered for the PS2 still?

Because it is proprietary and never hit the mass production curve that would drive down the price.

I have a few 256s you can have (but need to check when I get back to the US...)

Have as in Free? Or Have as in for a price?

Absolutely if you don't need them I'll take em and greatly appreciate it. The P4 is only running 256 MB in it at the moment and would benefit greatly from more memory. Otherwise I'm not going to put $$ into Rambus at this point since it's long dead.
