GTX 460 or 6850?

post #1 of 43
Thread Starter
My 5th gtx260 from EVGA RMA is broken again, and my 5770 from sapphire was DOA (and sapphire won't accept RMAs).

I'm thinking about getting a 460 or 6850. But I have a few questions.

Is it true that the Nvidia card has better IQ?
Is it true that with AA the 460 is faster?
Are nvidia cards/drivers generally more bug free?
Which one can OC higher?

I would go with the NVIDIA GTX 460. My NVIDIA drivers haven't given me any problem up to this day.

1. Yes
2. Yes for 1gb 460
3. Yes
4. Its relative the base clock, see review.

I'd grab the 6850. Its on par with the 1GB 460, and you have a Crossfire board....might as well get a card that can crossfire. Yes, there's the SLI hack but its not the same.

And ignore the driver comments. I've ran ATI and Nvidia both, a LOT of both. I have NEVER seen a driver issue with any single ATI card. Crossfire has issues, single cards don't. I have honestly had more issues with Nvidia drivers than ATI.

Stock for stock, I believe the 6850 wins, its almost as powerful as a 5850, which in turn is about as powerful as a GTX470.

1. Why do ATI cards usually have poorer IQ? This was true back in the Geforce 6 days and is still now (according to you).

2. The hardware canucks site shows that most games favour the 6850. I think most dx11 games are coded for ATI cards (because they had their dx11 cards out first)

Thanks.

It seems like AMD is cheating it's way to the top with the 6850s.

1. They don't have poorer IQ.

2. The amount the games "favour" one card over another is very small. The GTX460 and 6850 are close enough to provide no discernible advantage in the fps department in most cases. (Except maybe in the Heaven and Stone Giant benchmark programs lol)

get the gtx460 1gb from msi cyclone great value for money +remember u r getin the benefit of physx with the nvidia cards and the cyclone edition is factory overclocked and supprts voltage manipulation so a gtx 460 is faster than 6850.
here the equation
6850<=>gtx460 768mb
6870=>gtx460 1gb..

460 gtx 1gb gets my vote. The 6850 is still new, while the 460's are dropping in price like crazy yet the performance is better in most cases than the 6850. So imo it seems like a win-win to go with the 460.
