HDD score in WEI only 5.9

Thread Starter
I've noticed that a lot of you had problems with WEI rating your HDD's only 5.9, and some said that this is because mechanical hard drives can't get more than this. Well, it's not true, I have a WD Caviar Black scoring 7.3 in my WEI (Win7 32bit). What you may not know, that there's three SATA modes in every computer: IDE, AHCI and RAID. The default is IDE, so if you haven't changed your BIOS settings, it's probably still set to IDE mode. And as far as I know, IDE HDD's can get a maximum of 5.9 points in WEI. So what you should do is change the SATA mode from IDE to AHCI (or RAID if you have more hard drives), but before you do, install the AHCI driver in your Windows, or else you'll get BSOD.

Hope this will help you!

Does doing so increases actual performance?

Post a picture showing that you have a mechanical drive ONLY, and your WEI is in fact that high. I call shenanigans, there's no possible way you got it that high with a mechanical drive. The WEI score is based off access times, which your mechanical drive SUCKS at. Hence why 5.9 is generally the cap for mechanical drives (unless short stroked).

Normally, I don't think so, but it enables hotswapping (this comes handy with eSATA HDDs) and the most important: your WEI score will increase!
"It provides no performance benefit whatsoever in a typical desktop PC. In fact having it enabled usually imposes a small performance penalty, although it too is pretty small. It is only in enterprise environments, in which access patterns are far more random than in windows, and spread out all over the surface of a drive, that any real-word benefit is derived."

Hotswapping has nothing at all to do with the WEI. And you just contradicted yourself by saying that it provides a slight performance DECREASE.

There is no way you're getting the WEI rating you're claiming with a single mechanical drive....PERIOD.

And I didn't say hotswapping has anything to do with WEI, I only meant that setting the SATA mode to AHCI enables hotswapping.

Something's not right. I've seen that exact drive and the WEI is only 5.9
