guys, dont forget about operating system. If the OP is moving up from an OEM machine he will need to buy that too.

everyone just keep in mind this build is not for me.

this is a brand new build for a friend of mine. he isn't upgrading from dual core to dual core. this will be his first built computer as he has finally thrown out the premade. i just want to avoid all confusion. that's why i was going with an i3. you say the socket is fading and all that so what would then be he point if i got him an i7 on the same socket. this is suppose to be a decent machine that pushes a not so demanding game. the comp itself would last plenty of time long as its taken care of.

I still say get a amd x4 now, in 2-3 years you'll pay a fortune for a i7 (same as the Q9xxx series now)

For now you'll get a quad that out performs the C2Q series and the i3's

It has been clarified by the game developers that WoW is ran primarily off a single thread with the possibility of side tasks scheduled on additional cores up to a maximum of two additional cores. And that's not going to change with cataclysm.

Anything above quad core is overkill for WoW. A GTX 460 is, for the time being, overkill to play WoW. I own a GTX 460 and it down clocks itself while playing WoW and it doesn't affect my fps at all.

When I replaced my faulty 8800GT with a Palit GTX 460 there was absolutely no performance increase whatsoever (in WoW). On the other hand when I overclocked my Q6600 to 3Ghz I got a nice 10-15 fps increase. That gain increase to roughly 35ish fps when I reached 3.6Ghz.

Cataclysm should bring a few tweak to take advantage of nowadays powerful GPU therefor a GTX 460 or anything in the same performance range should be more than enough.

Bottom line, to get good WoW performance, go wild on the CPU and don't be afraid to "skimp" on the GPU.
Major srkillz.
