Motherboard fan slots

Thread Starter
Hi all,

as reading my previous threads you may notice that iaam instlaling a new mobo and various components i purchased along with it.

I hope you don't minds helping me on a few issues i encounter:

Today, i came to install all the wires etc to provide power to the components.

1. As i am new to this, am i right in saying that there are wires spare incase i were to install more hard drives, floppy disk drives, etc?

2. Also, i have got two wires saying fan only on them - are these for the case fans (i do not have a case fan)? Does one have to be installed to the mobo or are they entirely for case fans?

3. With regards to the slots on the mobo as to where the fans 'clip in', looking at the mobo ( ASUS P5ND2 SLI SERIES) manual, it says that there are 5 places on the board as to where i can insert fans: these are.....CPU_FAN (INSTALLED) CHA_FAN1 (NOT INSTALLED, DONT KNOW WHAT THIS IS FOR) NB_FAN (NOT INSTALLED - SAME AS ABOVE) PWR_FAN (INSTALLED) CHA_FAN 2 (NOT INSTALLED, SAME REAONS AS ABOVE).

Do these fans NEED to be used? If so, where are the fan wires? ..or are they incase i purcahse extra components? Please brifely explain what NB_FAN AND CHA_FAN mean please (i dont have a clue:/).

4. On the mobo, i see that there are two led's, one that turns on (green) when i switch the power on, but the red one does not-- does the red one turn on if there is an error, when the green led would be off?

5. On the mobo (circled in white in the picture below as an attachment), what connector goes in to the plastic slot?

6. Lastly, does this motherboard have the q-fan 2 feature?

Thank you all for your help, it is very much appreciated, lets hope this pc is sorted by tuesday

ps, please answer using the correspoding numbers to the qestions so it is eaier for me to unpick (1,2,3,4,5,6)
Regards
Mark

1. yes spares if neccessary.

2. fan only are just extra molex connectors for case fans if the need arises.

3. cha fan 1 and 2 are places for 3 pin case fans that the mobo can monitor fan speeds and power the fans. NB fan is a fan for the northbridge, if necessary.
These fans aren't necessary but will keep rig cooler.

4.not sure

5. cant make out what it is

6 not sure, but bios setup should tell you.

2) DO NOT use there connectors for any other than case fans. Your PSU is connected to the PWR_FAN connector on the motherboard. This way the speed of the fan of the PSU is controlled by the motherboard. Any and all casefans connected to these "FAN ONLY" molex connectors will also be controlled. Thus, if the case is cool enough, fan speed of fans connected will be lowered, by lowering voltage. No need to imagine what happens if you connect a hard drive to these connectors....

4) see 5). the red light will light up if you run dual video cards (SLi) and you did not connect the EZ Plug. p 6-6 of the manual.

5) This is a four pin molex connector, called EZ Plug, (standard one), but it is ONLY needed when you run dual video cards. See p 6-6 of the manual.

Pretty nice.. but why did you get an ATI card with an SLI motherboard? No plans to run SLI any time soon? You can get a And I just edited my previous post to answer 4 and 5..

Maybe a 7600GT is an option?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130283

That gives you the option to run SLI in the future when you want to

The ATI is a good card, but you won't be able to run SLI with it of course.. that's why I make the suggestion.

Just making sure. Have fun with your rig. You should be just fine! I don't know how intense Call of Duty 2 taxes your system, but I run Oblivion smoothly on my rig with quite high settings. You have a bit more powerful CPU, and I think Vid Card wise we seem fairly close (you have advantage of PCI-E over my AGP card). If you have any money laying around and don't know what to do with it, other than sending it to me, I would suggest looking into another 1GB of ram in the further future. No rush for that though.

Have fun

Thanks

ihave only had the pc a month and i am now basically making a new one (bar a hdd, floppy drive). So that was basically a waste of 700 quid. I will probs upgrade to 2meg, as gameplay will be smoother and faster

cheers

As i am not fairly good with computers - this is my first project based upon poc hardware etc, which is a consideration i have to take in to account before i either improve my pc standard, or mess it up lol.
In my case, the latter is more likely to happen
