Me first "REAL" gaming rig - Page 2

Not yet sure if he's serious or not, but a friend's said they'll by my current PC off my once this one's done. So yeah, I gotta start thinking about all the other components...

Almost definitely going to get a GTX 460, not sure which one though.

As for RAM, I really have no idea. I was planning 1333MHz as the i7 860 apparently doesn't support anything higher, but after reading a few threads figured that wouldn't be a problem. Now I've just read a review that says something about having to overclock the RAM to get 1600, even though the board's supposed to support it OOB. Can someone please shed some light on what RAM I should be buying? The board's dual-channel, so I want to get 2x2GB to start with, allowing room for easy upgrade to 4x2GB later on when I have more money.

What's the best "bang for buck" heatsink available at the moment? I aim to get as much juice as possible outta the CPU without having to water cool. 4GHz would be nice but it's not the end of the world if I can't get it.

When it comes to PSU, I gather Corsair is the way to go... Will the TX650W be enough? I've got no plans to go SLI, so the only stuff I'm likely to upgrade is the RAM, as well as adding extra drives as required.

Also, if anyone can recommend some good fans and fan controllers, I'd be eternally grateful... My last fan controller went up in smoke, literally

Sorry to blabber on, but I don't wanna be making any mistakes with this build that're gonna end up costing me more money later on.

Is there a reason why you are getting a 460 instead of a 6850 or 6870?

I just know too many people that've had problems with ATI. Sure, I know one or two that've had problems with Nvidia too, but the number of ATI problems I hear about far outweighs that of Nvidia. So yeah, while I've heard good things about ATI too, I'd much rather stick to what I know.

That said, I'm considering ATI in the build after this, as that'll be more of a budget build.

EDIT: Oh, and it looks like I'll be running this dual-booting OSX now too, and ATI support for Hackintosh is somewhat limited.

The build looks awesome so far and I love the picture of your old case beside the HAFX. A good value CPU heatsink would be the Hyper 212+ and you would probably be able to get 4Ghz with that, although if you are willing to spend a little more you would have a lot more options.

Thanks

The Hyper 212+ is, to my surprise, about the same as I paid for the Freezer 7 Pro r2 in my current build, so for value I'd say it's amazing! Was looking for something a bit more bulky, but this is a great fallback option if I can't find anything. I remember seeing something in a youtube video some time ago, think it was a Thermaltake or something like that? Thanks for your input though

Edit: Maybe it wasn't thermaltake... They've only got one on OcUK and it looks nothing like it! Ahwel, will keep looking

Haha, I'm not sure if I looked at the -E Pro, but I'm pretty sure what it boiled down to when I chose the board was which one looked the nicest and had the most PCI ports or something daft like that

What do you use yours for?

That's the heatsink decided
Just seen a post in another thread that mentioned the Thermalright Silver Arrow, so after reading a review it's now an absolute must that I get it

Now all I need is money. Oh, and to work out what RAM I need.

w00t! The parts I ordered on new year's eve finally arrived yesterday

Well, most of them. They forgot to pack the RAM though so had to call around a few shops in town, and ended up picking up 2x2GB OCZ Gold (1333MHz) for £55. Not ideal, but it'll do until the proper stuff arrives.

Got the system built up last night when I got home, and apart from once when it lasted long enough to install the latest Ubuntu, it was constantly rebooting - normally before it got to POST. The PSU fan wasn't coming on at all other than for a second when I switched it on, but apparently that's a feature of the AX850. Still, the only thing that made any sense to be the issue was the PSU, so I swapped it out for the one in this system. Still didn't work.

Took out the heatsink and it booted fine (still on alt. psu) so I swapped the corsair back in and still booted... CPU temps minus heatsink were at 90°C idle though, and rising, so I didn't keep it on too long =P

Really not looking forward to reseating the Noctua, but it's gotta be done

Will add some pics soon
