Opteron now or AM2 later - Page 2

We will not see any huge movement until AMD transitions to a new architecture. They very likely will ride the coat-tails of K7/8 for quite some time yet.

AMD will likely move up to Quad core which will, I believe, be based on on K8 design ie. "K8L" which would seem to indicate that it is a K8 derivitive for Longhorn/Vista and which does not bode well for a new architectural release any time soon. The prevailing wisdom is that K10 is dead in the water.

I do not forsee an architectural release until 2008 but this is pure speculation based on available data. As new data is released the speculations change.

I was debating the same thing, but I have decided to wait until the end of the year. That way everyone's cards will be showing and we'll see how they look. It'll give AM2 some time to mature and we'll get a good look at Conroe.

I have read somewhere, not sure right now where I think it was C.P.U. Magazine, that a new architecture for AMD is set to be released 1st quarter of 2007 that will better the Conroe. Intel will get a little taste of being on top, but their reign will be short it appears.

Well I've been thinking the same as all of you. It just seems that AM2 just doesn't have what it takes. So I will most likely get an Opteron, and you guys say that the 144s are doing pretty badly lately? In that case I will try to get an 146 if they are doing better than the 144. Thanks soo much for all of your help.

Whether or not AM2 sprints out of the gates on May 23rd, the socket will be the company's platform for a while, so an am2 purchase now will set you up for future AMD stuff. Of course, a dreaded socket change could come at any time, and DDR3 is already being talked about.

There is nothing wrong with the overclocking potential of the Opteron 144's..save the lower multi of x9.

There are quite a few members here whom have Opteron 144's and have them overclocking nicely.

I for one (regardless of the fact i could not afford one now) would not be rushing out at first release of the AMD AM2 CPU..sit back let the others do the initial investigation and testing of them at their or their sponsors cost.
It just seems that quite alot of uncertainty surrounds them.

So Xie67 you think I should get a 144 rather than a 146. There is about a $40 difference between the two. So if I could get a 144 I could get better RAM and a better PSU. I know a few months ago there was hardly a difference between the 144s, 146s, and 148s other than price. I just don't know if now with the different steppings if that has changed at all.

Agains thank you for all the help.
