need an opinion on which course to take

Thread Starter
I've been pouring over these forums for the last week or so trying to figure out the best bang for my buck. Essentially my options are these, stay with the p4 2.66 i have now and buy some new ram, mobo( if my mobo is not a great overclocker), some sort of aftermarket cooling, if money allows a 6800gt, and try to squeeze any additional power i can get out of this thing ( with the help of the faqs and these forums of course )or buy an AMD venice 3000+, mobo, and graphics card and upgrade ram and overclock a bit later in the future.
I pretty much will be using this updated computer to run Heroes of Might and Magic V, Oblivion, and probably some of the Steam games ( HL2 and episodic content). Im not too concerned of running at super duper settings at this time, just at medium settings with decent framerates.

I'm asking in a thread because after looking at dividers, multipliers, ram timings, vcore settings, et al I realize I have no idea whats going on

Thanks for any suggestions, especially specific items I should be looking at, in advance. I'll check the forums after work.

Go for the 3000+ venice. You can usually get another 200mhz+ without after market cooling.

Another gig of ram wil keep you going in the gaming area etc.

Cooling is ur weakest point, you need a better HSF on u CPU, Big Typhoon is good or a zalman heatsink.

Your card will do fine atm, if you want ot upgrade go 6800gs or even 7800gs.

Last thing you can now buy P4 boards with PCI-E so you can have the latest GFX lol

I have only got a link for UK Etailer, prob just as easy for US.
http://www.ebuyer.co.uk/customer/pro...uct_uid=102945
And cheap to boot !
EDIT// ASROCKS site with info on bord : http://www.asrock.com/product/P4Dual-880Pro.htm ( i will probably be getting one of these soon, Cheaper gfx and RAM atm)

Hope this helped, Ace

Welcome to the forums! I see that most everything in your system is second-generation. Join the club lol. What's your price range? I think upgrading the graphics card (7800gs maybe) and getting more ram would help the most. Just upgrading the graphics card might require a new power supply, as I get the impression your current one is crap. (My rosewill 400w died long ago)

Past the ram, video card, and psu, I think you'll be fairly limited by the motherboard, cooling, and cpu. Again, what's your price range, and how much do you really want to get?

EDIT: The video card is *the* most important thing when running good settings. Secondly, the RAM. The cpu does do a lot, but a nice video card and lots of ram will help greatly. I think your p4 could go quite far, could you post a screenshot of cpu-z to determine the stepping and such?

I'd say if you don't have to have a new system right now just upgrade a few parts and wait for conroe(Intel) or the K8L (AMD) no not AM2 it will be the same but with support of DDR2 memory.
