7900GT Vs 7900GTX discussion thread

Thread Starter
Dear all, I am just wondering on this because there is too much information on the net and frankly its confusing me. The question is whether 7900GT is a better investment than 7900GTX. I believe (correct me if i am wrong) that both cards are essentially the same and have the same core except the fact that 7900GTX has 512MB memory while the 7900GT has 256MB. And of course the core speeds, memory speeds & cooling solutions also differ.

For me excepting the difference of memory size, everything else can be rectified. meaning, the cooling solution can be replaced with H2O cooling and volt modding applied to increase core and memory speeds.

But i am wondering whether this will make both cards equal in terms of performance, again not taking into account the memory size? lets debate this shall we?

The only difference is the memory, and the core voltage. That's it!

Search for my thread (7900GT vmod) (with the brackets)

And you'll see what it looks like when you put 1.55v (gtx is 1.4v stock) to a 7900GT...

It's just amazing, and I'd HIGLY recommend getting the GT if you don't wanna waste your money on a GTX.

Since you're doing water cooling, I'd go with the 7900GT. With the volt mod, you can get performance equal to a 7900GTx, and you'll save yourself $200.

+1 for 7900GT

it's cheaper and can be clock as high as GTX's. SLi 7900GT with heavy modded might beat SLi 7900GTX ?

I don't think you should even be looking at a 7900gtx. If you want a great value, get the 7900gt. If you're willing to spend more, get the x1900xt or xtx. They're slightly faster, slightly cheaper than gtx, and have better image quality.

1. he isn't asking about the x1900

2. why would you want to flash an x1900 to an x1900xtx? just overclock it a little and it's the exact same thing....

well, yesterday night i read the vmod thread at extremesystems.org and dang aint it easy. thanks for sideburn for the link though. i think i am going the way of 7900GT and do a voltmod using a conductive pen or something to oc it. beats having to spend double for 7900GTX. guess i made up my mind like it. maybe would even do a SLi down the road. either that or might just do it now.

boys, next weekend i'm finally gonna get to buy all my stuff. I'm going with the 7900GT because I've heard the eVGA Copper Heatsink one will OC well, and it's the newest nVidia card to date.

Interesting, would like to see it get to a GTX in terms of speed. I'm even gonna be going SLi this fall.
