ram overclock obv.

Thread Starter
i own some corsair XMS ddr400 2-2-2-5 memory.
its running at ddr424 or around there 3-3-3-6. i actually squeezed an extra 200mbps out of it...
but i heard someone say they overvolted to 3.4V.
will my memory be likely to handle 3V? i've tried it before, but it was immediately unstable.
ill probably try again later if you guys think it's a good idea.
i duno what my memory will handle lol without fans on them and all

Do NOT volt them that high. That's a pretty bad idea.

lol well i got it to 2.87V, 2.91V was too much. stress testing it with Prime 95 currently... been running a few minutes now..
so far its stable at ddr506 3-3-3-7...
maybe ill squeeze a bit of extra speed out of my memory yet

You can measure with a thermal probe or an IR thermometer. The easiest way to check the temp is to use your finger. If the finger can be placed on something for a period of time, the temperature is not above 50 deg. C (if you don't have very thick skin)

haha ok, btw bimmer, 300x10 = 3ghz not 2.7ghz like it says. got an explanation for that?
btw, i lowered voltage before i let prime95 run all night, seems to be stable
i think ill try that with a bit lower of timings later... i don't wanna keep the voltage so high though

Sorry, I have been playing around with multipliers and HTT a lot lately. The correct multiplier is x9
Run some memtest86 passes before priming. That will give maximum RAM load and not so much CPU load. Nice to know that your RAM is stable before testing the complete system.
At a given timing you should try to change frequency and voltage to find the optimal Vdimm. When you push the voltage to high the RAM gets to warm and unstable. Adding a fan above the RAM will help you get higher frequency at high voltage.

yea, i know. voltage = stability, but adds heat.
whats memtest do anyways? ive heard a lot about it, but prime95 has a torture test thats specialized for ram testing.

The problem with test programs is that you can not get maximum memory load and CPU load at once. Memtest86 does different tests for memory stability, and will only give the CPU load necesary to move the memory data. It will give a good indication of memory stability. Prime95 does calculations that will give different memory and CPU load. Large FFT will give the highest CPU load and lower memory load and is very good for CPU stability testing. If the system can do >10 passes of memtest86 >10 hours of Prime95 large FFT it should be almost rock stable. I have experienced that Prime95 large FFT is the worst test to pass.
