These are a few options, from http://www.atcomputer.com.au/:

Intel:
INTEL CELERON 775 3.0GHZ CPU / 533MHZ FSB / 256K CACHE $110.00
KINGSTON KVR400X64C3A - 512 / 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM $70.00
WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR 80GB 7200RPM HARD DISK DRIVE / 8MB CACHE $75.00
LG GSA 4167 16 X DVD WRITER / BLACK / DUAL LAYER / OEM $60.00
ATX MIDI CASE 8870KL / 400W $70.00
P4 775 ECS 661GX MOTHERBOARD / DDR 400 SUPPORT / FSB 800 SUPPORT / ATA 133 SUPPORT / ON BOARD 4 CHANNEL SOUND GRAPHICS AND LAN / 8 X AGP $75.00
PANASONIC 1.44M BLACK FLOPPY DISK DRIVE $20.00
ATX MIDI CASE 8870KL / 400W $70.00

$550 AUS

AMD 754 GIGABYTE K8VM800M MOTHERBOARD $80.00
AMD SEMPRON SOCKET 754 2800+ PROCESSOR $120.00
KINGSTON KVR400X64C3A - 512 / 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM $70.00
WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR 80GB 7200RPM HARD DISK DRIVE / 8MB CACHE $75.00
LG GSA 4167 16 X DVD WRITER / BLACK / DUAL LAYER / OEM $60.00
ATX MIDI CASE 8870KL / 400W $70.00
PANASONIC 1.44M BLACK FLOPPY DISK DRIVE $20.00
ATX MIDI CASE 8870KL / 400W $70.00

$565 AUS

- I normally don't advice a PSU that comes with the case, however, this is super low budget... Not a lot of choice.
- I selected a single stick of 512MB RAM. Easy to add a second (identical) stick for dual channel DDR 1GB in the future.
- The 2800+ is socket 754; this combination is compatible.
- Conclusion: their system special is a GOOD DEAL!

Okay for a barebones to suit your requirements:

CPU..Celeron D 336..here..$146.00
Barebones..ASUS Vintage PH1..here..$247.00
RAM..Geil 2 x 512Mb PC3200..here..$152.00 will run 2-3-3-6 to about 205MHz

Give you a total of $545.00. You can drop the RAM to only 1 x 512Mb if you need to keep below the $500.00 mark.

cheers

I think that's the way to go. If you can get it for $480 AUS that's a good deal (see my parts comparison). Ask them if it is one 512MB stick or two 256MB sticks. If it is one stick, you can upgrade easily in the future..

I think you're ok with 512MB for now, esp. since you're running Linux

The cooler of all coolers is the ThermalTake Big Typhoon (did not find an aussie website in the few mins. I looked around), but that one is pretty big and might not easily fit your mATX MoBo (a problem that might occur with other HSF's also).

Alternatively, the ZALMAN CNPS7700 - ALCU CPU COOLER is good, which can be found here http://www.atcomputer.com.au/subcat.php?cid=141 (if you can get the all copper version, then go for it). Again, fitting might be an issue. However, this one is compatible with your MoBo: http://www.zalman.co.kr/product/cool...MBlist_eng.htm
I have the smaller version myself, and happy with it.

My recommendation is to get that $480 system (it IS a good deal, as my earlier breakdown of the parts shows), and check how much space you have. If that big tower named the Big Typhoon fits, then get it, otherwise I recommend the Zalman

The all copper version will be a couple degrees cooler, but not anything spectecular.

Go to the Zalman Link I gave before (the MoBo listing). There is an install movie on the top right hand side. When the movie opens, click the Socket 754/939/940 tab. You will have to install it before putting the MoBo in the case (it needs a backplate).

Also, get some Arctic Silver 5 instead of the thermal paste that comes with the cooler. It's better
