cant play dvds

I am almost ready to give up. I just built my new system and everything works great, except I cant play dvds. I have an nec3550 dvd+rw and it will play dvd video games (oblivion), but I cant play movies. I also have an external dvd+rw (LG) and it has the same problem. I go to play a particular movie on either device and it doesnt allow the movie to play, but instead freezes up (at the powerdvd5 screen or the wmp screen). Then I have to end the program to stop the freeze and it asks if I want to send microsoft an error report.

I have installed the firmware for the nec device and everything is set to dma mode in hardware manager. I have tried rolling back the drivers, unistalling the hardware, and have even reformatted my hdd 3 times. The movie is recognized if you look at the particular drives. Also, I can play cds fine. I am thinking this is a software issue.

I have the latest drivers for my video and graphics card. I am also using windows xp sp2.

I would appreciate any advice.

I think I have a codec. The one that comes with power dvd? I assumed that the codec was part of the installation process. I even ran the microsoft tool that informs you of compatible codecs and it says its fine. I cant even open power dvd without it freezing (when not trying to play dvd but just selecting the tools option).

Try using VLC media player.

www.videolan.org

If it works, than your install with PDVD got messed up somehow.
